So, I got that Necromancy of Thay book and that Amethyst. How do I get Gale to consume it? I really don't want him to explode.

As for Gale eating the tome, good Luck, I believe this will be a story item at one point or another in the future.

Step 1 after placing the stone in the book there should be an option to give it to him... Assuming he is around and you didn't already give it to some one else

Step 2, select gale as your character and open the book from his inventory ie right click and use

Then pass the tests and he gets a new spell

Doesn't work that way if I remember correctly. Gale does not get the book same as Astarion after you choose the option. He also does not need to read the book, he needs to consume its magic. And this is done by long resting (can take several rests) and triggering his particular scene.

It does in deed work that way

Giving powerful magic items to him to eat is a different script

Must have mistaken it for something else then. I remember him just browsing through it quickly and saying he'll keep it for later. Then the scene triggered in camp where he immediately consumed it after giving it to him again through the dialogue menu. Was patch 7 I think.

i have seen that scene yes and vamp boy goes a little nuts if you give it to him instead... both of those are filters which you get reguardless of fail or passing the checks to get the spell

Yep, in the latest patch if you give Gale the book in dialogue after putting the amethyst in outside of camp, he’ll initially say he’ll keep it for later and next time you’re in camp he’ll consume it (and in the meantime it doesn’t actually show in his inventory). I think you might also be able to give it to him like any other magic item if you put in the amethyst and don’t open the book, but haven’t tried that lately.

If you have Gale interact with the book after finding the gem and place the amethyst in it himself, then he’ll read it rather than consume it.

I assume this inconsistency will be addressed in the full release.

(And if anyone else opens the book, Gale won’t be able to consume or read it.)

Oh, thanks for all the help. I have a few things to try now. I should've waited for the full release, because the early release seems pretty buggy. lol


Edit: I was finally able to get Gale to consume the Thay book. Turns out my main character was ungrouped. Oops.
