I think the way they handle companions in BG3 is not optimal. Basically, if you've met them and they're alive, they'll be in your camp. There is apparently no way for them to be in the world and alive, and not be in your camp.
Compare this with BG2. The Copper Coronet may be your base for practical reasons (most companions can go there and it's close to the next map border), but it's also just an inn so it's perfectly fine for NPCs to be there at any time without being in your group. So if a companion is indispensable for the plot, they could be placed there, kept alive but you'd still have nothing to do with them unless you wanted it or they approached you for some plot reason.
Maybe the full game will be different, we'll see. But so far this feels weird, as if you'll canonically always have all the companions. I personally like to have all the companions, but you should be able to get rid of them without killing them, as a rule.
