Short races are more work for cinematic dialogue, and most players simply don't care about them. If you are doing a companion or orgin you want to appeal to as many people as possible.

How many dwarf ocs do you see out there compared to teiflings or dragonborns or even fauns, not many.
One of the most popular companions ever was a dude named Morte. Also almost certainly the shortest companion ever. Something like a foot, top to bottom.

I don't know on what you're basing this constant assertation that nobody wants short companions. And given the previous Baldur's Gate games, it just feels a bit weird.
