I think WoTC is missing a ton of opportunities in plying the digital space. BG3 shows what can truly be done but it seems like they treated it as a one off.

For me, they are pushing the revamp of D&D Beyond. It seems like a perfect fit for an out of game portal capability for their digitally licensed products and not just a stand alone product. They have a built in Dragon Age Keep that Bioware had to build independently already there to drive all sorts of new eyeballs to it as a resource. Want to build your char early? D&D Beyond. Want to export your char after BG3 to transition that char to table top, D&D Beyond. So many possibilities yet they seem to be thinking too parochially.

Thoughts? Any other ways that they are missing out on opportunities here?

IMO the Honour of Thieves movie should had been tied in - marketing wise - with BG3.
I was really surprised that there had been no advert for the game among the pre-show commercials. Or something DnD related.
Then again, with the audience consisting almost entirely of nerds and disinterested GFs/BFs, maybe it was not worth it ...

Honour of Thieves sucked, and bombed. All that hype, and media pushing it as a godsend was laughable. Pure garbage with maybe one or two exemptions. An insult to dnd and dnd players. Chris Pine is one of my fave actors but such a waste of movie.

I would dare to say that there is marketing opening ...
It certainly have potential, but if they wouldnt treat carefully, they may quite easily screw it whole. :-/

Why do you feel that way?

The humor was mostly not funny. Sure, thete was some exceptions.

The barbarian having a 'shorty' fir her SO reeked off fetish from both sides not actual relationship.

They had black elves- not drow- which is insulting to FR lore all to appease so called progressives. It made no sense. This isn't me being racist as despite my criticism above, I has no issue really with the black female barbarian. Largely because of the actress.

They did Neverwinter a disservice. It felt like a blind fake fantasy city, not Neverwinter. I surely hope bg3 dies better with its city thiugh I worry the city is held back to the end.

Chris Pine's character was Chris Pine pretending to be a bard. He's too good if an actor.

The magic was not magical. The Red Wizards were treated laughably. Not intimidating in any way. Never fir a second thought she was a threat. The only magic in the movie that looked really good was the shape changing.

Instead of being set in a fantasy world where the people who live there would live thete it felt like a mockery of what someone who dislikes dnd/fantasy thinks dnd is like.

Other stuff annoyed me as well, but I want be bothered as lithe film has already wasted enough time. I really hope thry dint maje a sequel. The last dnd filmmdud that too despite failing.

There would good parts, but not enough to justify the hype. I expect more espicially with the hype and reviews it got.

4/10.

Maybe speak only for yourself.
That a revenue of 200+ Million compared to a budget of 150 is seen as "box office bomb" speaks volumes about Hollywood's expectations these days. Profit was made, end of story.
The movie was not marketed well, but I found it very well made, and as a D&D player myself, I found it charming in many ways. My only slight displeasure was at a Bard that doesn't cast a single spell, but I understand why they did it.

Anyway: they'll make more, and I'll watch more.

Profit was not made. A movie needs to make 2-3× its base budget to make a profit. It was not profitable. End of story. Also, take your own advise - speak fir yourself. Afterall, I was soaking fir myself. I never suggested otherwise.

I actually enjoyed the movie. I went in with an open mind, having found out about it’s existence the day prior.

I had an absolute blast, yeah the pacing was all over the place, the female barb sucked and Neverwinter looked too “grandiose”, too clean… like something out of Disney cartoon about Princess Beautiful or some sht.

But it did entertain. Up there with the best of superhero movies of the past decade.

My mistake then about the profitability. However saying that a movie "sucked" and was "pure garbage" and "an insult to dnd players", without indicating anywhere that you're expressing a personal opinion means you're clearly stating something as objective fact.

Nah. It was very clearly an opinion. Saying something aucks us as much an opinion as "it was great". It is clearly subjective. Saying it bombed or was a success is factually right or factually wrong. Clearly a difference.

Should 99% of posts on this forum be marked as opinion at the start?

Afterall, someone Saying npc x us great or bad is clearly seen as opinion based. So should one's statement about a movie.

Oh God-damn it. Skipping over the elves can’t be modeled after people of African descent garbage, Michelle Rodriguez is Hispanic. She has some African heritage, like many Hispanics do, but she is mostly of European descent, and she looks it.

You do realise that wild elves in DnD are literally dark skinned?

Pretty sure WoTC's shooting themselves in the foot with their OGL1.0 Drama killed some of the hype for that movie anyways, since it pissed off alot of us in the TTRPG community at the time, WoTC just really likes to pissed of their own clientbase half of the time with their own stupid decisions.

The Sy'Tel'Quessir, the Green Elves have darker skin and heavier builds than other elves so there's no reason there couldn't be (non drow) elf with dark skin and hair. I do think it's important to insist that producers hire actors with lithe, slender bodies - especially if you are representing an Avariel - but elves come in many shades.

Pffft. :p I liked the dwarf quite a bit. It was a fun movie.

Edit: I somehow missed that @alyssa_fox already made this point. Could be because the forums were slow it may be because I'm an idiot.

Dark complexions are normal among Green/Sylvan/Wood/Wild elves dangit! It's not 'appeasing the progressives' to have dark skinned elves! That's just accurate to the lore!

I too really enjoyed honour amoung thieves and I hope they do more forgotten realms movies.

They did do a tie in with honour amoung thieves, Keys from the Golden Vault - an anthology of heist adventures including one at Revel's end. But they don't seem to be doing a tie in adventure book for bg3, not unless 'Phandelver and Below' or 'Turn of Fortunes Wheel' (planscape) has some connection we're not aware of yet. They may feel the existing Descent into Avernus adventure is enough.

As for the d&d beyond - they're currently working on integrating that with their upcoming 3d virtual table top/video game hybrid thing. So they're probably not going to divert resources from that to add a bg3 character importer.
