you'd better ask this in a related forum, I'd suggest the 'general' forum

Hi,
first off all, i'm not a native english speaker !
Ok, what is to do, that run under linux:
- the game must be installed unter windows with all patches. - start linux. - get the lastest version of wine from their [url=http://www.winehq.com]site. - install wine-sources: ./configure && make depend && make && su -c "make install" (i take in the configure-options: --disable-debug --disable-trace --enable-opengl) - go to the directory where is installed, for example /dos2/games/Divine Divinity (/dos2 is my mount-point for a vfat-partition) - go to the subdirectory called Run - start the "configtool.exe" with "wine configtool.exe" and make the following options: - software-rendering - 800x600 - skip test - start the test - mount your dvd/cdrom with the game-cd ! - run with "wine div.exe" - have fun
I tested this with the german version of and the 2 latest patches.
On my -Page comes soon a more explained description of this.
A screenshoot of a running under [url=http://xanlosch.piranho.com/grafik/div_linux.jpg]linux.

The reason is, that the install-program wan't install under linux. I don't figure out why. (The cd is mounted and the install-process is on the way but the installprogram dont find the cd !)
I write first a german article howto install it under linux and will translate him later.
If somebody help me for the translation, contact me, because my english is terrible.

I use GNU/Linux since 4 or 5 years. First distribution was SuSE and since a half year i use my own distribution which based on the book from LinuxFromScratch or short LFS. You must compile everything yourself and you know what you install.

Sorry, it is not my distribution. The owner is Gerard Beekmans. I think he is from the Netherland and live now in Canada.
My advise to you is: Read the book, read it again. It is not easy and follow the book in every instruction.

And to "the_bean". For example: You can play in a window. and play on a very stable system (Linux rulez)

is it hard to learn....? What do you mean: build a linux from scratch or build wine ? Building a linux from scratch is hard when you have no or less linux experience. It is easier when you have a lot of experience. Building wine is a lot simpler but you must know what you have to do, too. Xanlosch

First version I installed was "Slackware" a long time ago. Was not a problem until it came time to get "X-Windows" working. Then you had to know the specifics of your Video Card and Monitor or you could fry a monitor very quickly if you ran too high frequency for the monitor. Now a days distos like "Suse, Redhat, Mandrake, etc" will step you thru it and will do almost all the configurations for you. But you still need to read every step like "Xan" said just to make sure not to make a mistake. Most of time you can download the distro fro free as a image file and then burn the image to a cd if you want it for free. But be warned that most images are huge (Mandrake I believe is 4 or 5 CDs with just about everything). Or you can buy the distos at places like "http://cart.cheapbytes.com". Also a good Linux Book will definitly be a big help also!! Enjoy!

I was reading the past posts. This thread is really helpful. I prefer any UNIX system over windows. Unfortunately, most games are released for windows.

Xanlosch: Your site looks great (though I don't really know, I can't understand it). I'm drawing this from your instructions (very nice, if I may say so). Out of curiosity, what program are you using to go between Windows and Linux (Lindows?) I'm trying to make the switch though not finding a good program (well thoroughly tested at least) that allows me to run both. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope i understanding you right: you search for a program where you can start windows programs on linux ? You can use VMWare but you must buy it or you take Wine for free. The difference between VMWare and Wine are: VMWare simulate a complete intel-based PC and Wine emulate the most of the Windows-API-Calls. You need for both a fast cpu and a lot of ram. If you asked for a GNU/Linux-distributation: for newbies are RedHat, SuSE or Mandrake good. I can you give an adivise: get a few different distributions, test and compare they yourselve and use one. Xanlosch

As you can see, I made a sticky about this thread as it can be interesting for some people playing But please keep in mind, that these instructions are not supported by Larian Studios. oh my God,
shall we start windows bashing? As long as I can play DD I don't care which OS I have installed. Windows is a remarkable OS and also is MacOS and RedHat and SunOS and so on...

I use: Mandrake Linux 9.2, Windows 98 SE and Windows XP Professional. I use windows for games, and Linux for school-work and programming. But sometimes i play DD on Linux. One of the cool things about Linux is, that the most of the software is free, and can be downloaded from the internet. The bad thing about Linux is that it dont have DirectX, that many games requires. Therefore i use windows for games. (i'm using Linux in this moment)

Does any play DD on linux or do all use Microsucks Windoze? I play it on Linux, because i'm too lazy to reboot only for my few games Out of curiosity, what program are you using to go between Windows and Linux (Lindows?) besides the mentioned VMWare and Wine, you could also use WineX ( www.transgaming.com) - it's a Wine with extended DirectX-Support and (in the commercial version) support of diverse copy-protections. So you could say its a special wine-version for games.

I would you only inform that my homepage has been moved. The new location is http://www.xanlosch.de and the description "Divinity on Linux" can be found here. A few improvements have be done but a smaller part must been done When the next Wine release is out i will post a short description for the -Demo on Linux.

I just thought i'd say that it is cool to see other people playing on 'nix I personally use Ubuntu, Hardy release, playing (English CD plus lastest patch) through Wine from the winehq repository. I have configured it manually with all the dll files suggested by Xan as not all of them are available from the wine config gui tool. didn't work without those dll files for me The other configurations specific to I've had to do is: "use as windows 98", emulate a desktop at 1024x1280, disallow window decoration, disable Direct 3D, and select basic under Direct Sound. Those not using Wine 1.1.10 may not have a clue what the above refers to! I can't get to work on my Windows XP partition as it crashes every 21 1/2 minutes to the second so for me linux as Ubuntu with Wine means I get to play

Why does it crash on xp ? I'm running on windows 7 64; and before that xp without issues. I tried running it under wine but my linux box has a rather poor graphics video subsystem and it didn't run very well.
