Yes, I personally would not want to do a solo run, but I have no problem controlling the companion NPCs. Plus I like at least the veneer of being able to pretend I am playing with other players (even though I don't like the personalities of the EA companions much). And to add to something the OP mentioned about his daughter not knowing D&D (so this is replying to the OP, not Warlocke), you don't need to know anything about D&D to play BG3. But, ultimately, in the category of "unasked for advice" (and we've already seen some), perhaps BG3 is not the game for your daughter.
