Happy launch week, folks!

We hope you’ve printed out your lawyer-approved special dispensation form to explain your mysterious absence from work on August 3rd to your boss, because there are only three days to go before release.

After six years in the making, Baldur’s Gate 3’s PC launch is right around the corner and we couldn’t have gotten here without you. So let’s have one last Community Update before then to wrap things up, answer some of your biggest questions, and reveal a few final surprises before you finally get stuck in.

Wield the Power of A Mind Flayer

When we announced and launched Baldur's Gate 3's Early Access back in 2020, we ran with the line “Mysterious abilities are awakening inside you, drawn from a mind flayer parasite planted deep within your brain,” and since, we never really expanded on what this meant mechanically. We hinted right from the get-go that mind flayers would be a central pillar in our story, which we’ve explored many times since then, but now it’s time to explore how it ties into the RPG systems of Baldur’s Gate 3.

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

While these creatures may be a source of great power, all that they offer comes with a cost. As the parasites' hosts, you must make a choice. Will you resist the powers and the corruption that comes with them or will you embrace them, risking your body, mind and soul to save the Realms... or destroy them?

If your desire for power outweighs your concern for the well-being of anyone else, or if you simply think psionic levitation would be a really neat party trick, then Illithid Powers may be for you.

Illithid Powers are a hidden skill tree used to enhance your command over your newfound illithid capabilities. Those who wish to harness the parasites' power must first find more of these parasites throughout the Forgotten Realms – some can be located inside jars and in pools of brine, others within the skulls of the infected. And then you must consume them.

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

Each parasite consumed unlocks one new Illithid Power within a skill tree of 25 powerful mind-flayer-inspired abilities, completely separate to the options you have when you level up in a traditional sense. These are divided into five branches themed around manipulation, health restoration, psionics, and abilities that can inflict immense damage and torment enemies to gradually weaken them over time. Some abilities can be used to control those around you, pushing them to say things in dialogue they would otherwise not. Others endow you with the power to push and pull enemies like ragdolls during battle.

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

You can even become a displacer beast.

The deeper you go through the illithid skill tree, the more powers you'll discover. But nothing comes without cost. While your companions can also consume parasites to gain their powers, not everyone in your party will agree to it, and your companions' perception of you can undergo a significant shift based on how you approach this opportunity.

Things can also get a bit more… complicated. But we won’t spoil it. That’s for you to discover.

Meet the Phenomenal Extended Cast of Baldur’s Gate 3
Last week, we revealed our third and final villain of Baldur’s Gate 3, joining J. K. Simmons and Jason Isaacs in an unholy triumvirate of evil: Orin the Red, as voiced by the ever-iconic Maggie Robertson. But the cast of Baldur’s Gate 3 is much bigger than the terrible trio you’ve seen in some of our recent trailers.

Today, we wanted to shine the spotlight on our talented extended cast. The world of Baldur's Gate 3 is brought to life by many talented voice actors who bring incredible performances to each role, whether it’s a supporting character, a narrator, or a circus ringmaster/necromancer/drag queen.

If you've already played Early Access, you'll recognise the dulcet tones of Amelia Tyler, who returns from her role voicing Malady in Divinity: Original Sin 2 to take on the role of narration in Baldur's Gate 3. Also returning from D:OS2 is Brian Bowles, who will play Sceleritas Fel – the vile and loyal servant to the Dark Urge. (If you played Blood in Baldur’s Gate, you’ll recognise his voice from the video shorts that bookend the tale.)

Actor Vinegar Strokes, known for her role in the West End musical Everybody's Talking About Jamie and the first season of RuPaul's Drag Race UK, plays Lucretious, the proud leader of an extraplanar circus filled with mummies, redcaps, djinni, dryads, elementals – you name it, she's got it. She loves red wine, denying her employees paid holidays, and strives to be, above all else, utterly fabulous.

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

Sophia Nomvete, fresh from her role in Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, takes on the role of Captain Grisly, a former pirate who retired from a life terrorising the Sea of Swords to become the proud owner of the Blushing Mermaid – one of the roughest taverns in Baldur's Gate.

They will be joined by the likes of Doug Cockle – the voice of Geralt of Rivia in the game series The Witcher – and Abigail Thorn of the fantastic Philosophy Tube, among many, many more.

Respec Your Party and Forge Your Ultimate Dream Team

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you have the freedom to respec not only your chosen protagonist’s class but also that of your playable companions and pre-authored Origin characters, whether you’re looking to make a few adjustments to their existing build, you’ve got a burning desire to experiment with entirely new playstyles and class combinations, or you just want to create an all-badger supergroup.

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

Keep in mind that certain Origin stories are closely intertwined with their characters' respective classes. If you’re opting for a non-cleric Shadowheart or a Wyll without his warlock pact, this will undoubtedly influence your roleplay options in dialogues and the overall narrative for these characters. But their stories will instead be yours to create.

Launch Day

So just how big is this game, anyhow? What time should you expect the game to release? And where did I put my keys? The answers to most of these questions can be found below.

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

Baldur’s Gate 3 will launch on August 3rd at 5pm Gent time, or your non-Belgian timezone equivalent as shown above. There will be no pre-loading of the game before then.

The full release of the game weighs in at approximately 122 GB. Please note that your Early Access save games will not be compatible at launch; however, so much has changed that it’s really worth it to start afresh.

We've also been receiving questions from some of you who have already purchased the game about replacing your PC key with a Mac one. Purchases of Baldur's Gate 3 made through Steam and GOG actually come with both PC and Mac access, so you're all good! The Mac version is set to arrive after our PC launch.

Cross-Save Compatibility

Baldur's Gate 3, through virtue of our own accounts system, is cross-save compatible at launch. This will continue to be the case through September 6th’s PlayStation 5 launch, meaning that, for example, if you wanted to play on your PC or Steam Deck, you could continue the adventure on your PS5 on September 6th. The PS5 version is sold separately.

Whether you’re playing on PC, Mac, or PS5, you’ll be able to upload your saves to the cloud via your Larian account and continue right where you left off on a different platform.

Will BG3 Run on Steam Deck at Launch?

Yes, you can play Baldur’s Gate 3 on your Steam Deck at launch and it looks rad. We are aiming for Steam Deck Verified by August 3’s launch date. It launches on Steam Deck with what we consider to be the most optimal graphics settings, but feel free to play around. You’ll be able to avail of full controller support, and split-screen will be disabled on Steam Deck.

We recommend trying out your preferred method of antialiasing. We’ll continue to work on implementing FSR 2.0, but that will be closer to September 6.

4K System Requirements and Ultrawide Support

Baldur’s Gate 3 can be played in 4K and on ultrawide monitors. We created a pipeline that meant that all cinematics in the game were created in a way that supports those of you with a penchant for excess. Let’s have a look!

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]
[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]
[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

The purple bars in the images above show the 16:9 cutoff. The green bars show where ultrawide begins, to capture the full expanse of every elongated tentacle.

With a good CPU and a GeForce 3060, you can play at 1440p at 60fps. Native 4K will require double fill rate, so we recommend using a top-end GeForce 4080/4090 or AMD equivalent. And of course, with DLSS, you can reach 4K with lower requirements, thanks to the wizards at Nvidia.

Romantic Alchemy - Finding Love in Baldur’s Gate

A wise French-Canadian once said, "I believe that the heart does go on." Was she referring to the love lives of D&D characters? This writer says yes until proven otherwise.*

*Editor's Note: There is no evidence in D&D lore that suggests Celine Dion ever wrote her famous song in a bizarre allusion to D&D romance.

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

Many of you have asked about your options in romance, as well as the limitations you can set for yourself, and that we set for you. While you adventure, you forge genuine ‘human’ relationships with those you venture with. These can flourish into relationships that add gravity to every decision you make in the game, and you’re free to pursue them through deliberation, choice, and consequences. However, you’re also able to back out of them at any moment, change your mind, or fall in love with someone else.

To offer further clarity on exactly who can romance who in Baldur’s Gate 3, we’ve laid it out in the least romantic way possible, below:

- A played Origin can romance an NPC Origin
- An NPC Origin cannot romance an NPC Origin
- Played Origins cannot romance other player Origins

Our relationship system is designed for romancing NPCs only; however, if you and your co-op partner both kiss your monitors at the same time, the static shock you’ll experience produces a heart-racing effect similar to the feeling of love. If you begin to feel pain or numbness in your limbs, please go to a hospital immediately.

Untangling Dialogue: Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Many eagle-eyed chatterboxes have noticed that Baldur’s Gate 3 allows you to look back at a dialogue history while you’re in conversation, in case you’d forgotten what you said (understandable – you’re tadpoled), or wanted to realign your train of thought. We’re happy to confirm that, yes, you needn’t worry about forgetting what you’ve said (potentially exploding the entire world, ending up in jail, allying yourself with an actual murderous alien, etc.) thanks to the ability to look back at the conversation and get a sense of where you’re at. It's a neat feature that pops up in the community a lot, so we’ve decided to highlight it for those who haven’t yet jumped in! Doom-scrollers, do not worry, we got your back.

On the topic of doom and chatter, we get a lot of questions about how conversations work in a party of four, so we thought we’d lay out some scenarios that explain how it’s handled.

Typically, the character who initiates a conversation (in both single player and multiplayer) hosts that conversation. In multiplayer, the other players can witness the conversation by clicking on the appropriate icon or character, which will allow them to vote on the host character's choices in dialogue. The host is free, and often right, to ignore them.

“What if I enter a conversation with a character who has the wrong proficiencies for the choices I’m dealt?” This depends on a few things. When a conversation is started unexpectedly, the character who initiated whatever led to the conversation will host the conversation. That character's proficiencies will therefore be the ones used to decide the fate of the conversation.

To give you an example, if you run around a corner and bump into someone unexpectedly, you’re the person who’s going to have the conversation.

[Linked Image from clan.akamai.steamstatic.com]

In some cases, you can back out of the conversation and re-enter it with another character by (in single player) selecting another member of your party. In others, fate works as intended: as fate. Our dialogue systems are designed to feel organic, as they would in real life. Where there’s agency in life, there’s agency in Baldur’s Gate 3. When situations are more fateful, you’ve your wits – and your proficiencies – to untangle them.

In multiplayer, you will also have the option to set certain dialogues to private, so your teammates won't be able to listen in on them. Perfect for romance... or betrayal.

Whether it’s based on race, class, or other proficiencies, it’s important to remember that there are truly no wrong answers, but plenty of consequences. In the long term, the story will be defined by your choices, and the consequences of your actions. You will always have choices to make. Trust the dice, it’ll always show you a good time!

Three more days.

Didn't read most of the stuff because spoilers, but the release date stuff is very sad for Mac users. Hopefully they can play soon too, same as Xbox users. smile

We knew there'd be no preload, Steam literally never did this for games already in early access. Why does this still hurt in a way? My stupid brain again, hard at work.

I'm extremely happy about Steam Deck support at day 1 though.

First day, download it on my laptop and play, second day, go offline on the laptop while playing and download on the Deck. Where!

Hearing about the extended cast was neat. And regarding the tadpoles, interesting to hear how many ways there will be to find them. And the specific use of the word consumed gives me hope we're not going to be literally adding more tadpoles directly into our brains. I think that that version of the system would really just be too much. However I'm disappointed there seems to be no defaulting to the custom character in single player. That is deeply frustrating and in my opinion it actually takes away agency rather than adding it.

Thanks for the Mac mention. Crossing my fingers we can get our version before the PS5 version drops, if not, oh well. Will be playing on GeForce Now until then. I hope they are giving you a nice commission

Based on how other games work, any Twitch streamer with "drops activated" and within the "Baldur's Gate 3" category will work. Just make sure it says "drops activated". You'll also need to link your Twitch account to your Larian account (under "Connected Accounts").

That could overcomplicate things. Imagine:
A PC has a slow-burn with Shadowheart which may get it full strength only by act 3, maybe. Or what we know for sure a PC can decide to break up with Lae'zel to pursue Shadowheat.
But she's scripted to fall in love with Gale by the end of act 2.
What happens in this case? Do we break Gale's heart or does SH break ours? Who starts to hate whom? Do we lose a companion?

Oh no! Drama!

Love triangles are a thing, in fantasy more than most genre fiction.

Have you played Dragon Age: Inquisition?
When you are NOT romancing a follower ... they start to kinda flirt with each other during your adventures, implying that there is something going on.

And that is all it takes really. laugh

It just makes our companions feels a little more "alive" and little less "please enter your interaction user". :-/

As if we didn't have them flirting with each other here in BG3 for whole act 1. I doubt they won't do it anymore. But that's just barely a romance.
And I played something that had 2 companions actively romancing each other. Mass effect 2. Yet It had same shallow type of romances from all Bioware games of last 2 decades. As soon as I flirted with Garrus he was forever locked from romancing Tali, even if I wouldn't go further with him. And my whole romance with him looked that exact way Larian said they want to avoid.

0% interest in romancing any of the origin characters, but the illithid powers look cool. I like how they have done a genuine corruption temptation here with genuinely powerful abilities for all classes. Gale - partial illithid with 9 tadpoles with a free spell each short rest!
Can't wait for a 2nd dark urge illithid playthrough!

I'm really looking forward to that release. It was about time. But there is one thing, which bothers me to some degree:

Twitch drops. That really sucks! I don't have a Twitch account for a reason, since I simply don't watch other people play a game, I want to play myself. There is nothing more boring in my opinion than watching other people play a game, you could simply play yourself. And 2 full hours? Seriously? What a waste of time. That's an ass move Larian!

And yes I know, it's possible to have a stream running in the background and fully muted, still it's a pain in the ass, because I needed to make an account for it on a platform (twitch), which doesn't interest me at all and during those 2 hours I would have reduced bandwith. Not cool, Larian, absolutely not cool!

Btw check out the steam forums, a lot of players are not happy at all with your decision to give out exclusive twitch drops! Please think about that one more time, because many people obviously aren't amused about this and including myself reject Twitch. At least don't make this content exclusive, give it to all players at some point later.

I already commented on reddit, but I'm pretty sad that other players can't be romanced. My husband and I had several playthroughs based on Origin characters just from the offhand comment in Update 7 that it would be possible in the future.

I really hope romancing/more interactions with other players and a better dialogue system for switching characters is something that is patched in later or considered for future games. The game already has a toggle for turning off romance scenes in multiplayer and I just assumed this would include player romances. It's depressing that the dialogue system in general hasn't really improved at all since Divinity Original Sin 2. The dialogue system as it is now hurts people playing in multiplayer and singleplayer really, since you can't decide who speaks or even use whoever has the highest skill for skill checks in dialogue.

Yikes from the update that companions still steal the pc’s dialogue when dialogue starts automatically! Maybe there will be a mod to fix that?

Keep in mind that certain Origin stories are closely intertwined with their characters' respective classes. If you’re opting for a non-cleric Shadowheart or a Wyll without his warlock pact, this will undoubtedly influence your roleplay options in dialogues and the overall narrative for these characters. But their stories will instead be yours to create.

I don't understand why it's so hard to get consistent answers on this. Swen said in an interview that respeccing Halsin away from Druid would not change his dialogue and that he would remain a druid in dialogue. So now we're being told respeccing these characters changes their story? Or is this post simply saying that the way the PC avatar interacts with these characters might change based on player whimsy? Why phrase the explanation this way? We can do whatever we want in our heads -- we know this. We want to know what the game does in its programming. Please just say how the game mechanics treat these choices without goofy phrasing.

Please clearly indicate which character's stories change significantly when respecced and what options trigger those changes. Is it just class? What about their background?

Sorry Larian, you couldn't pay me enough money to suffer through 2 hours of Twitch. Sure, it's Baldur's Gate, but it's also interspersed with donation comments and videos, along with the streamers taking breaks from the game to go watch random videos on YouTube and start drama with other streamers. No. No. No. No. No.

I am a bit confused with this respecing origin characters too.
I understand that if I respec Astarion it shouldn't affect his origin story too much as he seems like a character who's story is not really tied to him being a rouge. But respecing Shadowheart would mess things up as her ties to Shar are essential to her origin story.
What I don't understand is that bit about influencing our roleplay options and the "story will be ours to create".
Does it mean that if I make Shadowheard a bard then all her story arc won't play out at all? Or it will play out but it will be just messy cause everyone will treat her as a Cleric while all she has to say is Bard dialogue?

Breadtube is not a selling point. Who's next, Hasan Piker? Big fucking ick here.

Actually this news makes me quite sad and I am questioning if Larian is a studio I want to support at all. Of course, as one of millions, I hardly matter here, but I might as well express my thoughts.

Yeah, exactly it. I want to know to what degree my choice to respec them will break their story. If it's just awkward because mizora keeps showing up despite Wyll being a druid or whatever, that's one thing. If Mizora stops showing up at all, that's undesirable. I want to see Wyll's story.

The twitch thing is such a nonissue. I don't get why anyone cares. Just turn it on and mute the page. Don't even pay attention to it. 2 hours later, boom -- new underwear.

Im not even going to open the twitch thing at all. I actually have a twitch account and the drop just... doesn't interest me and so I'm not gonna participate. Though I do get why people who like the outfit would be upset

What a civilized approach, you are truly a man of culture. I myself am going to follow in the same steps.

My understanding from one of the previous updates is that you will at a minimum lose some dialogue or have dialogue that makes no sense (barbarian gale being treated as a wizard), but quite possible for some characters they will cut significant things. IMO you are much better off leaving them to start as the canon class and multiclassing so that everything works / makes sense.

Our dialogue systems are designed to feel organic, as they would in real life. Where there’s agency in life, there’s agency in Baldur’s Gate 3.
I never expected BG3 to let me say what I actually want to say in dialogue, no RPG could accomodate all of my conversational quirks, but I fear now that the dialogue system is a reflection of Larian writers' poor mental health. If they actually think this is how the world works (stuff happens to me, I give the rote answer corresponding to my social status), I'd gently encourage them to remember the following:

Don't be fooled by your percieved limitations. You have more agency than you think! Also, it's okay to admit ignorance and turn to someone next to you for help and support. You are not alone!

I was actually thinking that as well. I won't probably respec any of the origin characters but if I do something then it will be multiclassing most likely.
It's just interesting to know how much of a story we will loose and how much will still play out but might get messed up.

Registering / making an account at Twitch, giving them some of my personal data in the process or having to set up a fake e-mail adress for that purpose, despite not being interested at all in this platform. That's already too much effort to begin with... I'm not a fan of gaming streamers at all talking bullshit and trying to be funny or their typical audience of 13 year olds with no life having nothing better to do than watching others play games. I completely reject Twitch and I don't want to partake in that, neither do I want to give some idiot streamer an additional view (even if I let it run in the background and muted) nor waste some of my bandwith for it. It's a pain in the ass to go through this, if you want to have the outfit for the sake of simply having it, despite it being, you know ... purple.

I get it. The question is - will "A played Origin" have ability for romances and/or flings with non-companion NPCs?

I certainly hope so, especially with one or two particular Tieflings from the grove!

Actually this news makes me quite sad and I am questioning if Larian is a studio I want to support at all. Of course, as one of millions, I hardly matter here, but I might as well express my thoughts.

You wanted news, you got news.

Now do you want the purple panties or not?
Under no circumstances do I intend to support political influencers in any capacity, but as far as the detestable breadtube goes, I suppose Abigail is the least nauseating. I can make my peace with it if she’s the fullest extent. It’s not like Corbyn is voicing Boo 😆 (would never happen. But if it did I would refund my steam copy).

I shall forgo the purple panties, but forgive Larian for this minor transgression. I’m not mad, just disappointed 😔.

I'm willing to bet that no one in charge of hiring her has any idea what Breadtube is. She's a professional actress outside of youtube, so she probably just auditioned, got the part, they saw she has a youtube channel that talks about philosophy and thought "oh cool, she's got a youtube following, let's mention that!"

I choose to believe you’re right. Abigail has done plenty of interesting things that have nothing to do with the rest of those influencers, so… I’ll calm down I suppose.

Hi Everyone,

My folks and I have been playing the early access for a long time now and one of them told me he wanted to play it after launch on PS5.

Is there a way to refund his early access key or to trade it for a PS5 copy ?

I have no idea what Abigail and breadtube are, and I'm not sure how twitch streamers of bg3 are politically related?

I'm not saying you're wrong. I just feel like I heard something about purple panties, and then something about politics, followed by the name Abigail, and now I'm wandering around in the Underdark without darkvision! I'm really worried now that I'm about to stumble into a breadtube monster.

Leftists. But not all of them are "leftists." It's a catch-all term for political content creators ranging from left to far-left to very far-left.
Also by left, not "American Left" which is liberal. More like "International Left" which is socialist, communist, anarchist, or other collectivist ideology.
Also, as it is a catch-all term, there is a lot of people in that space with contradictory viewpoints and styles. Some are rather chill, and others are toxic garbage.

Lmao.
I've taken on some political projects in the past in my line of work. Anything (geo)politics immediately turns off the humor portion of my brain. And I have friends who watch that stuff who try to tell me how to do my job. I really hate when people who are not in my line of work tell me how to do my job. It's one of the few things that gets me extraordinarily angry.

I play games because I want to escape, like many others. I do not like it when things intrude on my escape.

HOW CAN YOU GET YOUR PURPLE PANTIES IF YOU DON'T WATCH YOUR TWITCH?

*

I try to stay away from all things politic these days. Part of why I come here, I suppose, is to escape, you know? So I really don't know much about the leanings of sites and such. I usually just dip out when someone starts going on about whatnot.

There are a couple of twitch streamers I've checked out, and neither of them have mentioned anything political.

One is called MunkyRadio.

The other is a fellow who just started streaming about two weeks ago named BalanceLOH. (BalanceLOH is new to the game so he's fun to watch, plus he's pretty consistent at narrating what's going on and talking to chat.)

I'm sure they both have their own politics, but I've never heard them mention anything other than their enjoyment of bg3.

I'll probably watch one of them to get my own pair of purple panties. I'm not sure why I want purple panties. But if they're handing 'em out... I mean, it's not like I'm gonna wear them.

*

Normally I watch youtube when it comes to bg3 content. The two content creators I think know the most about the game are JibunFade and Casual Veteran Gamer. They're both extremely knowledgeable and capable. Well worth watching, in my opinion.

I also always make a point to check out Woflheart because I think he's a big part of the early access journey, and I appreciate that about him.

But none of those folks are offering purple panties, so what's a fella to do?

The royal panties doth tempt one so.

Would be great if Wolfheart got associated Wolf garments in game though. He’s always been pulling for this game, almost obsessively so.

The streamers sound fun… I wonder if this game could spawn new kinds of streams with audience interaction, potent if paired with someone of genuine charisma or improv humor capabilities.
