Imagine a game with an AI Dungeon Master, who creates a different game each time you start a new one. The AI - DM could pull from classical literature sources, old D&D books, and other popular fiction to create characters and major story arcs, and then it can fill in the detailed adventures and maps as it goes.
I suppose something like this might be good for shut-ins who have no other option. Or for a slightly more sophisticated experience in a BG3-like game. But it's true that there will never be a substitute for sitting around a table playing with other people (assuming a person is into that sort of thing, which I am). Even a VTT with other people is a distant second in terms of role playing (again, if role playing is a thing a person is into). I have no doubt there are a lot of people like me: I like PnP role playing and I like playing adventure/quest/story computer games like BG, Skyrim, etc.
