In my opinion it is not necessary to "win" conversations to have a good game. Results for failing can be more interesting sometimes than passing and also your high charisma does not reliably help you in cases you absolutely want one result. I don't know wether that's a thing in DnD TT or Larian homebrew, but you can reroll failed checks several times if you have inspiration (which is not that difficult to achieve). That's better than high Charisma for passing checks.

More important for me in the EA was high Wisdom. Later Wisdom will save you from nasty effects (which were very seldom in the EA), but it is very important from the start for perception checks, to notice hidden stuff. Having at least one char with decent Wisdom is mandatory for me, more is better. If I had only one Druid or Cleric, I would not change this ugly Minsc guy from Ranger to Bard.
