I dont mind Fex, never heard of him until PFH came out. The curious thing about this guide for me was, Correct me if Im wrong, however the way I heard it was, figure out your party, then figure out your build... and to me I always play what I want and then design my party right? anyway I MAY be thinking to hard lol.
He does say in there several times that "you don't have to do it this way" so it's really just one way of assembling a party. Specifically, if you care a lot about which companions you want to have with you in order to play out their parts of the story and are willing to limit your own class/role choices to achieve this.
You could also do something like go with a whacked-out fun/random class combination and just play on one tier easier difficulty say.
