I believe it has indeed been confirmed that we can pick camping supplies directly from the camp traveller's chest in the final build, so no need to manually collect them.
Also in the full release, all characters get a "camp supply sack" bag that I believe all food that goes into their inventory automatically gets sorted into. That probably needs some playing around with to be sure how it works though!
