Actually neutral evil now, or does his new backstory text just imply he's lying to the player?

Do you subscribe to the theory that Gale is a twist villain?

He definitely could be evil. We know he is extremely ambitious and at least in the past he hasn't hesitated to go for power grabs at the expense of others so he's definitely one to keep a careful eye on. Though we don't really know how his story will play out or whether he's changed since his attempt to overthrow Mystra has backfired on him. I plan to follow his story depending it isn't too much of an annoyance to feed his Netherese Destruction Orb though if I have the opportunity to turn on him for power I will, it would only be fair that he has a taste of his own medicine.

Hes always been neutral evil putting on a nice gu persona.

His real self creeps through with the Necromancy of thay.

Also his backstory didnt line up. Mystra has had lots of shall we say boy toys but they don't get cut off when she finds a new man crush.

And if she cuts you off you don't get reset to level 1, you lose the ability to use the weave entirely.

Its likely Gale implanted himself with the orb so he can siphoned weave off of magical objects

Yes, those are theories that have been around for a long time. However, they were just that: theories. As it looks like, it's not a theory anymore.

The Gale we know is manipulative, even if he approves of good aligned actions. The way I see him is that good is fine and dandy... as long as it doesn't cost him anything. People say he's prideful, but I have to wonder if it isn't just greed.

Mystra has also died since he and her had their fallout, technically she's still around much as the dead three were but she hasn't yet returned properly from her latest death. So I don't know whether he'd be cut off from the weave or not. But he is definitely dubious and not trustworthy...it's also more than likely he's not being entirely honest about the orb. But whatever the truth I'll get to it even if I have to beat it out of him.

Well, I've met Gale now and... his story doesn't really seem to have changed since EA? It's been rearranged a bit, which I VERY MUCH appreciate, thank you Larian, but that's all. Huh. think

I have now heard Gale's story in game, and I'm inclined to believe him. First, he did not attempt to usurp Mystra's power, that was a backstory to his attempt to unlock the hidden weave, how that piece of Netherese magic came to exist. Second his ambition to unlock Mystra's greater mysteries is a very natural one for a wizard to have and in itself not evil. Third, his attempt to win Mystra over was reckless, which is also a rather common flaw for a wizard. In that way he's the archetypal wizard.

Of course it's still possible he's lying, but if he's not, he's actually a rather interesting character. I'm inclined to play as him somewhen.

When I used the Speak with Dead spell on Gale it revealed some cryptic information
about his connection to Elminster & Orin: [Linked Image from i.imgur.com]
