A must-have. It could only add to the immersion, whether it's giving your protagonist longer hair or a beard as the result of having adventured in the wilderness for a long time, or whether it's to give your character a trim as part of a redemptive story arch where they start off as an unkempt, long-haired drunk in a midlife crisis.
