My level 5 rogue/ranger (3 rogue/2 ranger) doesn't seem to be able to sneak attack with scimitars despite them being finesse weapons and being proficient in them.

The sneak attack option is available, but the damage is impossibly low compared to short sword, despite the die rolls being ostensibly the same.

Is sneak attack only intended to function with "rogue" weapons despite the scimitar seeming to meet all other requirements?

I think Sneak Attack only works with "Light" weapons
Edit: nvm Scimitars are Light, don't know how to delete my comment.

Are you meeting the rest of the conditions for Sneak Attack? (Advantage on attack roll or ally next to target?)

Yes, in fact I tested it multiple times meeting the requirement for sneak attack and assassinate. Short sword would hit for 24 dmg if I recall and the scimitar would hit for 12 every time.

That doesn't make sense to me. I just tested this, by equipping a scimitar on my level 2 rogue, Astarian, he isn't proficient, and he just sneak attacked for 15 points of damage, which is a lot for that level. All using a scimitar did for him was reduce his hit chance from 91% to 84%

Might be a glitch, can you send a screenshot of your character sheet inventory? Just hit I and shot it.
