I have not noticed the things you're saying. But i do know that the spell system isn't the same as the old BG games and even Pathfinder. I don't play the table top D&D enough so i dunno if this is a 5th Edition thing or what.
What I realized is long resting only renews your casting counts for each Spell Level eg. Four Level 1 Spells, Four Level 2 Spells, Three Level 3 Spells. What spells you decide to memorize isn't even restricted to your casting counts. In the old rules, if you had only four Level 1 slots, you could memorize only up to four Level 1 spells, either of varying types, or of a single type...eg...Magic Missile up to 4 times. So if you chose 3 Magic Missiless and 1 Colour Spray....you're not gonna have more than 1 Colour Spray to cast. In this game, you have a certain number of memory slots - which act as the "All the spells you would want to use" slots. So again, if say Magic Missile and Colour Spray are in your memory slots, you can use both spells in any permutation, but limited to 4 times.
Again, I'm not sure if this is a 5th Edition thing, or liberties taken by the game devs
