Controller Usage Feedback!
~ 2 (small) Adjustments that would improve Controller Use immensly ~
~ And 1 slightly bigger adjustment idea that would be neat ~
Hi!
I hope this post finds you well!
So I've played a lot of this game with keyboard and mouse now (currently in Act 3), but I've also been playing another campaign on the side with a controller (which is a good chunk into Act 1 now) and I have some thoughts on two small adjustments (and one a little more involved) to the controller scheme that I think would make for amazing quality of life improvements.
First up, Radial Menus (Radials):
~ Love these! They're a fantastic and fun alternative to the hotbar customisation that keyboard and mouse gets which still allows for lots of ability and action customisation, meaning we (Controller Users) don't miss out on the fun of crafting our perfect hotbar layouts that the keyboard and mouse users get, the Radials are great!
However:
~ Currently, when you bring up your Radial menus (with L1 or R1), it defaults to the leftmost Radial first and that has some issues. The issues are mainly due to the fact that, when you create a new Radial, it always adds the new blank Radial to the far left, meaning, for example, if you want your attacking actions to be your default Radial, then you have to keep swapping each individual ability of that attacking action Radial to the leftmost Radial every time you create a new one.
i) One nice fix for this would be to allow us to set a default Radial of our own choosing, so it's not always the leftmost one focused when you open them with the L1/R1 inputs.
I think this would be great as we could then assign whichever Radial we want to be our primary one and build out our surrounding Radials from there.
ii) Alternatively, another nice option would be to allow us to swap the order of our Radials around, rather than just each individual ability/action one by one like we can now.
As this would make managing Radials a LOT less time consuming, as you would no longer need to swap each individual ability from your preferred default Radial to the leftmost one each time, and instead could just swap the whole Radial over at once.
I think implementing one or both of these adjustments to the system would be an absolute godsend for Radial management and be really appreciated by controller users!

Last up, non-Resource-using actions such as Swapping between Ranged/Melee:
This one's a bit of a gameplay impacter I think, as having your melee weapon out allows you to do Attacks of Opportunity and keyboard mouse users can just swap to their Melee Weapons after using their Ranged Weapon at the end of their turn where Controller Users can't.
I understand the Controller inputs cover a lot already, so some things will be sacrificed (like I don't think there's a button for drawing your weapon/putting it away either, but that has no impact on gameplay so isn't AS big a deal, just another example is all).
So my suggestion for a fix for this one, is that Controller Users get additional Actions/Abilities for their Radial Menus that cover the things that they can't do that Keyboard Mouse users can.
Much like the other abilities that currently exist within the game that don't take any Actions or Resources to use and can simply be toggled, this solution would result in icons you can press in the hotbar/Radial menus to make those missing actions happen, as we don't have any button inputs assigned to make them happen as shortcuts.
I think this third idea might require a bit more effort than the other two, as you'd have to make new icons for the Swapping between Melee and Ranged action (and any other actions you add via this method such as putting your weapon away/drawing your weapon), but any way to get Controller Users the ability to swap between Melee and Ranged at the end of their turn/after their attacks would be amazing.

So yeah!
Those are my thoughts on the Controller Scheme and ideas for two small adjustments that would result in massive quality of life improvements and make a world of difference for the Controller Scheme in the game!
As well as a third, slightly more involved, idea.
Thanks to any and all for reading this!
Happy to hear any other thoughts on this that aren't mine too.
Absolutely adore this game so far!
I hope you all are well!
