People have found out that if you kill Ethel before the masked lackeys, you can't save them, they've tried non lethal takedown and loot the mask and they either stat brainwashed or die.

I also wondered why can't we use those masks as any kind of weapon, entice hostiles or even npcs to put them on for the lulz.

Things like this could be a great and fun addition to the game.

You can save one mask - the halfling lady. At least it was this way in EA. I had to kill them this time around, since I somehow botched my non lethal takedown. But if the halfling lady survives, she offers you free drinks in the Elfsong inn, shoudl you come to BG, and she also gives you some interesting information about Ethel.

You can no longer do this post EA

Post EA they just become this permanent state of hostile, where they dont attack, and I am 99% certain its a bug.

In EA if you kill Ethel before you meet them, one of them is freed, the rest stay brainwashed. they need to re-implement this into the base game (or fix the bug)

The masked people CAN be saved, as I've done so a few days ago by sneaking past them and letting Ethel summon them during the fight. Then just ignore them during the fight and smack Ethel until she's dead.

Yeah, right now this is the only way

Its weird you cant save them by killing Ethel before meeting them though (they made it a lot harder to kill her this way, but not impossible, so thats probably why this bug wasnt detected)
