Honestly Halsin is just better off killed off in act 1...the best way to achieve that is by siding with Minthara. Even though when you get her as a companion her spirit is king of broken and she is far less glorious she's still far better to have around than Halsin. He's not even an origin character, he has no great or worthwhile quest as far as I can tell either, so he's always going to get killed in all of my playthroughs. If I ever take him and Orin grabs him I will not even try to save him though he's never making it that far in my games.
