She's quite important to Nightsong's story in Act 3, if you evil in act 1 she survives easy and is an interesting character to meet if a bit sudden. It's a massive leap to say she exists to die, might as well say the same about Gale or Laz, if you don't intervene they can die too.
Both Isobel and Nightsong were mainly put in the game to die in act 2. SPOILERS:
Isobel is annoying to save and not much reward for doing so, which alone isn't worth the trouble and beyond that killing her is an important trial for the Dark Urge, and the reward for doing so is great, plus you can still get Jaheira as a companion too so no real cost there but killing Nightsong is an important test for Shadowheart and doing so leads to Isobel dying anyway so you might as well just get Isobel out of the way first so you don't miss out on Jaheira too. I guess you could bend over backwards to try to save both but talking Shadowheart out of stabbing Nightsong is difficult and it ruins her character by making her dull and boring...I need my companions to be more enthusiastic about stabbing, not less. Even Jaheira in her misguided ideology is all about enthusiastically stabbing some people which is the perfect place you want companions to be at.

Not everybody wants or likes to play "evil". I'd say the vast majority of people will attempt to save both Isobel and the Nightsong in their playthroughs.
