It was moved the during EA to solve a multiplay issue
There are options to change it but not nub friendly
Yes the save games add up and that's especially true for people clicking F5 because quick saves and auto saves don't like the cross save system... To be fair it was designed for something else and Larian didn't do a great job of testing or communicating when they changed it
