I’m confused by the question. Unless I missed something major, you don’t pick an “alignment” at all anyway.
So you can play a thief who steals from innocents justifying that they need resources to fight evil. Or you can play a paladin who ruthlessly slaughters anyone they consider to be bad. You can decide how good or evil you think these things are.
As I understand it, the emphasis on alignment has been reduced a lot in D&D tabletop compared the old days (I’ve not played in decades). I guess the idea is for players to focus more on their characters motivations and personality than whatever they should be doing because of some label they picked.
Of course there’s still plenty of unambiguously evil bastards in the game, and some obviously good ones, but the player doesn’t have to pick a team and stick to it.
