I might be wrong but could he even see who you were before you pull him out?
I mean, the way he reaches out his hand it looks like his head is above the portal.

I am durge, you bitting the hand off is avoidable and gives you nothing in return. There are unavoidable kills in the story (only in act 1 underdark so far). Depending on your class you can mitigate durge outbursts. If your playing barbarian or fighter thou good luck passing the checks to do so.

Is the dragonborn race a prerequisite for this scene?

Is the dragonborn race a prerequisite for this scene? I don't believe so. as you can completely customise the dark urge in any way you want

The dragonborn has a mouth like a crocodile

I mean, he was stuck in that portal, chances are, he died there and went nuclear, wherever he was at that moment. He couldn't go out on his own, so if you just cut off his hand and leave him there, that's logically the end of the road for Gale

I assume he just dies? that does seem to be the implication of that scene
Also it's unclear if you cut it off or bit it off? you start day dreaming, then black out and when you wake up you're chewing on it.
Minthara is the best character and she NEEDS to be recruitable if you side with the grove! Also- I support the important thread in the suggestions: Let everyone in the Party Speak

I would have loved if there was more to it. like if you would suddenly meet him again in baldur's gate. him still missing his arm. then have to roll a check to see if he might suspect you or not. and more shenanigans. that would've made it more fun.

Well, there is more to it, but this I think it will disappoint you even more. It proves more that Gale is really dead. Spoilers for Act III and endgame so stop reading if you didn't get there yet. To meet Orin you need to do a kinda sacrifice blood ritual and you need to offer Bhaal... a hand.Somewhere online I red that you can offer Gale's hand, and that's it. So, he's dead. xD

just a little fyi dark urge isnt an elf dragon born or anything of the sort theres alot more too it that you'll have to play to see as for the hand bit yes you can do it regardless of racial settings you picked out. i always play dark urge, only one worth playing for me personally. granted that is my personal opinion.

In act 3 when you'll meet Sarevok and he will "measure your worthiness" the illusion of Gale will appear and Sarevok asks you how it felt to kill that person
So Gale it's definitely dying if you bite his hand off in act 1.

He couldn't go out on his own, so if you just cut off his hand and leave him there, that's logically the end of the road for Gale It's not the bomb. If someone rips off your hand, you'll be dead from exsanguination in less than half an hour.

Well, the problem with Gale that if he dies the bombs goes off in three days anyway. So even if he had some magic spell or potion to heal it. He couldn't escape wherever he was.
