Player's Handbook (PHB)

Quote
Martial Arts
At 1st level, your practice of martial arts gives you mastery of combat styles that use unarmed strikes and monk weapons, which are shortswords and any simple melee weapons that don't have the two-handed or heavy property.

You gain the following benefits while you are unarmed or wielding only monk weapons and you aren't wearing armor or wielding a shield:

  • You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons.
  • You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike or monk weapon. This die changes as you gain monk levels, as shown in the Martial Arts column of the Monk table.
  • When you use the Attack action with an unarmed strike or a monk weapon on your turn, you can make one unarmed strike as a bonus action. For example, if you take the Attack action and attack with a quarterstaff, you can also make an unarmed strike as a bonus action, assuming you haven't already taken a bonus action this turn.

No Unarmed Strike if Shield or Armor
According to the PHB, while the character is wearing an armor or wielding a shield, Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action should be impossible.

--

Unarmed Strike is Unarmed Strike
According to the PHB, Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action is an Unarmed Strike that costs a Bonus Action.
The cost does not change the properties.
In this case, 1d6+7 +1d4 Radiant.
It is not an Offhand, nor a Two Weapon Fighting.
It is a second Unarmed Strike at a Bonus cost.

Better Workflow

NB: Look at the 4K Poster for the graph.

Current Workflows:

When attacking a target. Confusing, as Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action has a distinct icon, appears on the opposite side, on the far right, and is lost (disappears) if not taken.

When attacking a target, but the player forgets to click on its Bonus Action located on the far right. 3 Hits.

When attacking a target, but the player forgets to click on its Bonus Action located on the far right, twice a turn. 2 Hits.

When attacking the void, no Bonus Action is generated. 2 Hits.

According to the PHB, Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action is an Unarmed Strike that costs a Bonus Action.
The cost does not change the icon, nor the properties, nor force this element to be taken immediately after the Attack, nor to disappear if not taken after the attack.
Therefore, they can be stacked, like a currency, for a later usage during the turn.

Proposed Workflow:

Only 1 Unarmed Strike icon. Icon stays in place, so the player cannot accidentally miss Unarmed Strike as a Bonus Action.
Every Attack generates 1 Unarmed Strikes as a Bonus Action, which is stored for a later usage during the turn (stacks).
1 Attack + 1 Extra = 2 Unarmed Strikes as a Bonus Action.
The order of consumption is: Attack, Extra Attack, and any Bonus Action left for your Unarmed Strikes as a Bonus Action.
No-brainer. Same icon at the same location, simply re-click.
