Oh, I would GREATLY enjoy to see a (good) BG2 remake, actually.
I just don't think Larian has any interest in doing one, even putting aside any sort of licensing issue.


Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN

I think there once was a Neverwinter Nights project to re-make BGI & BGII, but I am not sure what happened to that.


Looking ahead, I am rooting for an adventure inside the City of Brass ... it's picture is on the back cover of the old AD&D DM Guide book, and I have not been there yet!

"Baldur's Gate 2 but using the NWN 1 (or 2) engine" sounds dangerously similar to "a Big cake, but made out of poo".

Yeah, out here in the farmlands we would call it a "cow pie".

There is so much more story territory to cover! I'd love to see a game based on the Codex of the Infinite Planes, where maybe there isn't just one possible end boss, but a bunch of powerful entities all striving for control and it is not pre-determined which one will hold the Codex at the final battle.

It wasn't very good as it was NWN engine.

The problem with NWN1&2 was less the ruleset and how clunky the first attempt at a 3D tactical RPG was, and though a completely different style of RPG, it was completely overshadowed by Morrowind.

I hope Hasbro/WotC never let Larian near this IP again… but they likely will… none of these companies developed the IP and they don’t seem to have any respect for the IP—they just want to use the associated nostalgia to score big front end sales… could be I am wrong… it will interesting to see whether this game withstands the test of time…

I don't think this makes much sense. Larian would need to start completely on scratch if they want to do it in a similar manner as BG 3. BG 1 + 2 has a lot of minor NPCs with long background and lore dialogues, such as all the many and various takes on the Iron Crisis in BG 1. Voicing all of that would be an enormous undertaking & cutting it would be a shame. It would require the same effort as making a completely new D&D game - so why not create something new instead of trying to recreate the past?

Also, personally I think BG 1 + 2 are still better games than the still good BG 3, so I don't even believe it would be an improvement. Large parts of this are down to the ruleset.

I've wanted a BG total conversion of ToEE, DA:O and PoE but.. I sort of feel BG3 is too far in the future from them? it's too technical and modern, you couldn't have just a conversion to new engine/new graphics because BG3 is a AAA game in the way the others, while high quality, weren't and weren't trying to be? It'd have to be a whole new game so why not be?


Minthara is the best character and she NEEDS to be recruitable if you side with the grove!

Build the future, remake are made by companies without new ideas only for cash.

Larian has got ideas and passion, we need new games.

To be honest, I'd like EVERYTHING - I'd love Larian-made BG 1 & 2 remakes, but I'm also beside myself with excitement about the stories they've yet to tell.

Confess I haven't read the rest of this thread very throughly, so perhaps this has been suggested already, but maybe when the mod tools are available, there would be a potential for fan-made remakes? Are the audio assets from the first two games available to play with? I'm sure the licensing is a minefield but perhaps it doesn't have to be Larian alone but a collaboration of some sort. I expect I'm being incredibly simplistic about how this would work.

Anyway, DO WANT and absolutely WOULD BUY if they were available.

Eh nowadays you could simply have AI fully generate simple maps like the ones in BG1&2, Nvidia's game development AI already fully generates full artistic scenery and 3D meshes and such and its actually very capable if you have one of those high end Quadro cards.

I don't think anyone can pull off remakes of those two classics, but remasters using the Divinity 4.0 engine would be interesting.

# Rule nr. 1:
- Don't mess about with any of the sound (voice acting, music, ambient, etc.). Use the original assets.

# Rule nr.2:
- Do not alter the main storyline or other events to fit with whatever.

# Rule nr.3:
- MUST remain RTWP.

Whether or not it should use the new rulesets or not can be up for debate.

The most important part you missed is 'Must remain DnD 2e'.

Must remain RTwP for the 14 people who will keep the endeavour afloat with their each combined 30 dollars lunch money.

I am not sceptic. But RTwP is so niche that pandering to RTwP audience is like ensuring your studio to be disbanded by the end of the project.

RTwP is part and parcel with BG1 & 2. It's a core feature. It may be a niche thing at present, but that that's irrelevant when talking about a remaster.

A remake is different. That could certainly open up for scrapping RTwP. But then, I'm pretty sure it would squash other things that made the originals..well, original/unique.
