This was addressed in the game. Multiple times when you talk to him he explains that he used to deal with much bigger threats, but that the tadpole drained him of almost all his power. He's also never played up as being secretly more powerful than he actually is, which makes the sterotypical "Gary Stu" backstory work on him.

I can’t see Wyll as a bard. Dancing and singing around the battlefield doesn’t fit his character or story at all from my perspective, but I don’t really like bards much in general.

My idea is that his Paladin oath is a promise to himself to destroy his patron. Makes more story sense to me. Also, heavy armor and smites on Wyll are pretty cool. I killed Lae’zel, so he is my only heavy armor character. I don’t have a full healer in my party right now, so Lay on Hands is a nice perk.

A bard doesn't have to be just about music, it can also be about spreading stories and inspiring others via deeds. Wyll 100% fits a Bard and he would fit well with Valor, Lore, or Swords.
