Explainer

  • Inspiration: Kanai Cube (Diablo 2)
  • Objective: Incentive players to searchfor the best items, re-use them and find the best possible combinations.
  • Mechanic: Rather than increase the number of equippable slots, reducethe number of items through merge.
  • Merge: The item on the left receives, as a concatenation, the properties of the item on the right.
  • Soul coin: Unlimited merge operations, but limited coins.

This just sounds like making overpowered items even more overpowered. I'd rather not have it like this.

Then maybe start to balance these "overpowered" items first :P

There is no world in which stacking magical property after magical property on the same item will ever be balanced. If you keep adding numbers to the same sum, it is always going to get bigger. Trying to pretend innocence and shove it off on a perceived pre-existing imbalance is rather mathematically incorrect and straight up dishonest.

If a > 0 and b > 0 then a + b > a and a + b > b.

Yes, the resulting items will be more powerful that the base ones.

But if a and b are underpowered, then merging them is a valid mechanic.

Another possibility is to divide by 50% the resulting properties, but this can become complex as some properties are simply triggers rather than raw damage.
