In my play through that I completed today, I ended up taking Raphael's deal at the last minute because The Emperor joined the Netherbrain when I refused to let him have to Netherstones and he left me trapped in the Astral Prism without the Orphic Hammer. Raphael pops in and demands I accept his "deal": I get the Hammer and in return he gets the Crown at the end. I took his deal so I wouldn't be stranded.
In the end, though, the crown was destroyed. I expected part of the epilogue scenes to be Raphael showing up to tell me that my soul was now forfeit, but he did not. That was disappointing. Seems like it would be something fairly easy to address in an "enhanced" release.
