I didn't have a lot of trouble with Gale's problem, actually. I didn't spam Long Rests, so once he told me about it and asked for the first item, I had plenty I wouldn't be using to give.
Even after the first one, it was several hours of content before he asked again. Same wait until he asked for the third. Then we dealt with what comes after that.
If you don't spam Long Rests, it's actually paced quite well.
