so now after the release of the latest patch (1), my dog no longer fetches the ball.

I did pick up a ball in a village in the Shadow Cursed area and I sold it, did I sell the wrong one, does the game distinguish between
balls?

I think, it does. You might indeed sold the wrong ball.

You are correct, I went back to the vendor I sold it to and bought it back, this ball has an "Action" associated with it when you examined it.

So I guess the ball throwing is hard coded for a specific ball
