Just needed to post this somewhere I hope Larian devs see.

please adjust my post for risk of spoiling anyone else. how do I add tags?

I just had to share my thoughts on events in Act 2 near the Last light inn.

I have been thoroughly enjoying my Playthrough of BG3. my wife had the game since early access and we played a bit together. then I bought my own copy so I can play via smart TV GeForce now. From using the Internet with dial-up as a kid (I can hear the connection tone in my head) up to using broadband and just Bluetooth my controller and off I go... its mind boggling how much technology has advanced.

Along with it gaming as stories have gotten better and better. Stories have great characters that go through tough times. and you are always on the edge of your seat rooting for them. Boromir from LOTR great guy. troubled and struggling with how to save his nation. he fails but in the end he realises his wrongs and in the end helps to protect Frodo. he dies protecting the hobbits. Dumbledore from Harry Potter. Snape. all great characters. that you loved and hated and in the end appreciated for their sacrifices. They died heroes protecting the ones they loved. Stories have these beats to move along the narrative. I don't always like characters being killed off willy nilly. But sometimes it happens. People die... it sucks. but it has a motivation. it needs to not be senseless...

Now to my BG3 playthrough. i am a tiefling vengence paladin. I have been taking it slow. Exploring every nook and cranny of each map. leaving no rock unturned, no barrel empty and no pocket un-picked. I spent a lot of time in Act 1 speaking to all the tieflings in the groove. I really liked them. I am motivated to save them. they have had a tough lot and we're about to be forced to face danger on the road to Baldur's Gate. I wiped out the goblins. I came back a hero and celebrated with them in my camp. I felt I had assured their safety on the road to Baldurs gate. Zavlor and every single Tiefling set off safely except Kanon. I stood by his grave in the groove in prayer. I vowed he'd be the last Tiefling to fall... These people had been to hell and back. They needed hope. I was motivated to make sure they stayed safe.

I found a dead tiefling in the blighted village... Killed by Ogres. I got revenge for her. I found Arka too. I carried them back to the groove encumbered and slow. Felling each step weighing me down. Finally up the hill I left them near Kanon. On to the underdark and I helped the gnomes freeing them from slavery. In the Githyanki creche I found Ellyka... tortured and beaten by the gith... I picked her up and walked her outside to the sunny cliffs. I left her amongst flowers overlooking the beautiful mountains. High up so her spirit of adventuring and exploring would be warm in the sun. Then I culled the creche and pulled the mace from the temple burying the place.

Moving onto Act 2 I made my way through shadowcursed lands. As I moved south east I came across... more grief. I carried them all to the last light inn's graveyard. Encumbered feeling every step.

Xeph, Rechel and Amek had stared down the druids as they held a child. I placed them amongst purple flowers. May their bravery never be forgotten.

Toron had tended the livestock. I found a pitchfork and put it beside him.

Asharak had helped the younglings to train. I put a practice sword and shield with him.

Ikaron had watched over the rest. I placed a sword and torch beside him.

Kaldani had been manning the cliffs. I placed her overlooking the river.

Memnos had calmed Kanon's sister. Talked her out of killing a prisoner. I left a crossbow beside him.

My work down I made to speak to the surviving Tieflings. More had been taken. I was angry. I spoke to Isobel and the inn was attacked. They kidnapped Mol. Having protected the inn I made ready to head further south.

There are Tieflings to rescue. and there are Cultists to kill. I am motivated.

To Larian... I know this is a dark story... People die... The tieflings have had a tough lot. Please... tell me their deaths meant something... not just senseless murder. I just... don't know how many more steps I will have to take encumbered... carrying my brethren to their graves... But I will bury them all. And avenge those who were taken.
I

Am

Motivated.

(I made pictures which I will upload later when I figure out how to work this.) Happy gaming.

Don't hold your breath. There's a world of difference between good literature and Larian's nihilistic worldview.

I'm a bit ahead of you in Act 2 and so far I fail to see the purpose of the tieflings from a story perspective. Is it 'normal' for a community of tieflings to exist in FR?

To put something in spoilers type (without the spaces):
[ spoiler ] Put stuff here, then [ /spoiler ]

The Tieflings are the Kenny from South Park. More seriously, they're just basically your stand in for stigmatized and defenseless refugees. I really think they dropped the ball with Zevlor after Act 2.

BG3 made me bored of tieflings. Outside one maybe two of them, they were the most boring of characters in the game. The game would be better iff without them. It's an example of taking something that should be interesting and driving it so much into the ground it becomes meaningless. And, the Grove tieflings are almost uniformly evil, selfish, self serving, uncaring, piece if garbage Karen leeches I've ever seen. Absolutely no gratefulness. They think they're owed everything.

Okay, first let's make sure there are spoiler tags when discussing plot elements, particularly when it comes to Act 2 and beyond. It's great (in a way) that what happens has had such an impact on the OP, but let's allow others to experience the same by trying to make sure they don't accidentally see what's going to happen before they encounter it in the game.

Second, I also found discovering what happened to the tieflings in Act 2 powerful, moving and in some cases upsetting. Though I didn't go to the lengths of the OP to roleplay this! You have my respect for your commitment smile

Third, there are certainly things that I think could be done better as the game progresses, and hopefully will be fine-tuned and tightened up as Larian continue to polish the game, but (with the caveat I've still not finished) I've enjoyed having the tiefling's journey as a thread running through my story. Especially as my character is a tiefling herself, albeit from Baldur's Gate rather than Elturel, she has come to have a lot of fellow-feeling for them.

Fourth, my understanding is that communities of tieflings aren't the norm on the Sword Coast, but that having shared the experience of being shunned and exiled from Elturel has brought them together, and unsurprisingly led to a number of them probably giving more weight to that element of their identity as well as a common challenge that it does seem likely would foster a growing sense of solidarity.

Fifth, I disagree with Volourn. I'm not sure how to engage any more constructively than that without sending us off on a tangent!

I didn't like what happened in Act II.

Not because it was tragic and awful - it certainly was that. The problem is that it felt extremely forced, plot wise, for the sake of drama, and in the end I was more irritated than saddened. You can't tell me that no other, safer route from Elturel to Baldur's Gate has been established since the shadow curse took hold. It's been decades. These are major settlements. Someone would've figured out a bypass. And in the unlikely event that it's somehow impossible to reach Baldur's Gate without traveling through shadow- and cult-infested lands, then the solution is to go somewhere else. Many other cities exist along the Sword Coast and beyond. And if they were absolutely, completely determined to do this 100% stupid thing - why didn't we go with them?! Apparently they somehow make better time than our group does, and we could've been extra protection! But no. Instead we just show up to find the inevitable has happened.

Honestly, I just sort of sigh, wipe it from my mind and continue playing the game. Maybe I'll fixfic it someday.
