After all, there is no such information in the game. In BG1 or BG2 there was such information.

Any time you see a pop-up screen when you're about to venture forth, that's pretty much the next act.;

  • ACT 1 - Everything between the Prologue and Grymforge
  • ACT 1.5 - Mountain Pass
  • ACT 2 - Shadowlands

I heard you can do Mountain Pass after Shadowlands as long as you don’t hit the point of no return. I really wish Larian had committed to Mountain Pass being either Act 1 or Act 2, as it currently sits in a very awkward spot in the game’s progression. I think of it as Act 1, and part of why Acts 1 and 3 are vastly superior to 2, but others think of it as Act 2, and a redeeming factor therein.

Yeah, it is very annoying and confusing that there is no info on when each Act starts. Almost lost 3 companions because of that from the Act 1 and also Halsin from the Act 2.

Mountain Pass? I have not been there, does it qualify the same as Underdark?

it is better to do both.

As far as I can tell a1 and a2 are 90% overlapped...

A2 starts when you enter moonrise towers or mountain pass. If you don't resolve the goblin problem before then, the grove gets closed off and tieflings die. I'm actually not sure what happens if you stop the druid ritual and go to act 2 without killing the goblin leaders. Once in a2 you have to resolve the harper stronghold problem before going back to act 1 or it gets nuked. Other than that you can freely move between a1 and a2 and do whatever quests you want in any order.

Not necessarily... some of us play with mods and those unfortunately disable achievements. Given the choice between having achievements enabled and playing BG 3 closer to 5e, achievements gonna lose.

Does it matter which act we are in?

Act 2 is the Shadowlands. You can go to the Shadowlands and still return to Act 1. However, there is a point in story of Act 2 where you cannot return to Act 1 areas.
