Like a lot of people here I got surprised by the Marcus attack and lost Isobel. I survived the subsequent fight with the harpers and fists though my party had taken a kickin'. Definitely an RNG element to the fight. I lost either Lae'zel or Karlach in the first turn and the position of everyone made it difficult to focus on Marcus. Even with the fight downstairs some of the winged monsters came up into the bedroom. I rolled back and did the fight again and it was a simple enough fight knowing what to expect. Sanctuary on Isobel and everyone kick Marcus more or less won us the fight. Again RNG played a part with the harpers and fists downstairs keeping the winged things occupied.
All in all really poor way of doing things from Larian.

On my first play through I won the fight first time on tactician, but RNG mattered and it was freaking hard! I read Isobel's AC and HPs have been buffed a bit, so sounds like she can survive the all important round 1.
TBH, it's a preview of those hard Act 3 encounters where you try to save NPCs. It's much harder than Act 1, you're playing with the big boys now.
Is it fair? Not really. I think I was on half resources. If I had been fully out with no Sanctuary, would've 'failed'.
Totally unexpected? Again, not really. There's an inn with a protection of light around it, why wouldn't Moonrise attack it? There's also some dialogue at the entry bridge that strongly hints someone or something isn't right.
Here's the thing though, I feel I missed out a little by saving Isobel. The subsequent dark events sound cool and foreboding. I'll try to win in 2nd play through of course, and I'll be better prepared, but I won't reload if I fail.

Kind of surprised people are having that much trouble with this one. Not saying “git gud” or anything, I just found many other encounters harder. OK, first time i blundered into it after crossing the shadow lands without resting. Immediately reloaded that. But apart from that, both times I split a couple of characters off Marcus and Isobel to stop the winged jerks killing my mates in the tavern. Maybe that actually made it easier? Or maybe I just got lucky with rolls?

When I did it, we got surrounded. All the winged freaks came into the room.
My friend did this and barricaded the door to keep adds out. I stumbled in with full spells but no idea what to expect.
I failed and had no recent save.

The first time I did it Isobel was paralyzed immediately so I had to split turns between healing her and fighting

So here is what happened to me at the Inn with some background. I got fairly lucky with this I guess. I planned on being a "good guy" in my first playthrough so I rolled up a paladin which i didn't play as in EA. But I accidentally killed a tiefling when rescuing Lae'zel and broke my oath 30 minutes in. I meant to pommel strike but did a regular attack and killed him. So I just went with it, helped destroy grove and such. I didn't go full evil, i just went selfish. I did not rest before entering act 2, but i did after the shadow and Harper fight before entering the inn. After arriving at the inn i eventually went to talk to Isobel. I ran into Markus and spoke to him and he told me his plans to kidnap her. So I chose to attack him from the conversation. That let me know what he wanted and I was able to stop the kidnapping the first try. I'm not sure Markus would tell you his plans if he didn't already think you were on the Absolute's side. If that is the case, it's one of the few benefits from going a more evil route. Doesn't make up for all the quests I can't get, or the fact that Karlach wanted nothing to do with me after the Grove got destroyed so I was forced to kill her. Fine I just decided to kill her but still.

I agree that the encounter leaves a lot to be desired. I have only done the encounter on Tactician.
It is very easy to loose this battle in two rounds. If you loose initiative, it hard to recover. Isobel’s AI is bad. She often does things that endanger herself.
I think the game should give you some way to prepare before the battle starts. Maybe a warning that scouts have detected winged horrors probing the the defenses, or something like that.
I also agree that the fight should not end with Isobel being knocked out. The enemies should have to carry out Isobel while you have an opportunity to fight and defeat them, until they are able to get Isobel across the bridge. All or most of the people of Last Light should have Selune’s blessing, after Isobel gets knocked out. So, maybe you get some shadows infiltrating town, but nothing quite as severe as the current transformation.

I dislike this fight enough to skip it by getting the pixie's blessing instead and never interacting with isobel until after

To me the main issue isn't the difficulty of the fight but the fact that the fight comes out of nowhere and you have to protect Isobel without being told that you do. You enter the inn and Jaheira is positioned close to the door. She tells you about Isobel keeping the place safe and that you should talk to her. You go up to talk to Isobel and - boom.

Isobel fight is hard as it should be. I Play on tactical mode, and I failed miserably on first try, which had alot to do with being surprised. And yes it required a little bit of prep. But I succeded easily on 2nd or 3rd try. Id Imagine its a cakewalk on Normal difficulty.
Edit: correction, fight wasnt hard, protecting her was a bit tricky though on first 1-2 tries.
Larian, please DONT nerf any encounters, most are way too easy Even in tactical mode. People who cant handle a bit of challenge always have Explorer mode to fall back on.

"They say he who smelt it dealt it." Sooo technically... this burnt corpse is your fault officer."

Not everyone is as good as you. One top of it, I did it before patch 1 where explorer was bugged and actually harder than balanced. I'd play on explorer more but they disabled multiclass ability in it and that's a no from me.
