At the start, everything was fine. Now 12 hours into the game, we have 3 seconds freezes if you change the character or choose a attack. So mainly in fights.
Unplayable
It just seems to be later in the game. So maybe too much in the inventory? Or too many attacks?
I have read from other persons, they have it directly after loading a pc savegame, cause there also have more progress an no problems with a new game…
Having one person use a summon like Find Familiar also causes a freeze. Summons in general cause a lot when playing with my significant other. They'll have Find Familiar and Ranger's Companion cause lag when either are summoned and again when destroyed. A cleric's Invoke Duplicity also causes a massive lag upon creation and destruction.
Created an account just to corroborate the issues laid out here. My wife and I have put in somewhere around 12-15 hours and in split screen the whole game just...stops. Switching characters, accessing the inventory, sometimes talking to random NPCs around the grove etc (we're still in act 1). Also agree that the summons are a major issue. Using flaming sphere is almost impossible. Very much debating cutting my losses and taking my save to PC. Maybe even asking Sony for a refund (unlikely).
To be clear, I think the game is still playable, though not up to modern standards or Larian's. I would not currently reccomend the PS5 version to anyone looking to play this game in co-op.
But Larian is very good at what they do, so I have faith they will try and address this. But am worried that there are limitations to what can be done. Hoping for some kind of communication about the issue or at least a recognition that it has issues.
First time ever commenting on a video game forum. This game is utterly fantastic. I know Larian had some nice advantages in making this game (Divinity mechanics and DnD lore at their fingertips), but it's still a fantasy RPGer's dream come true and so they're to be congratulated. Personally, the inclusion of a couch co-op option was the decisive winning factor -- anything that lets you enjoy a game of this quality both locally and cooperatively is a victory for gaming.
BUT ... I agree with the OP.
The freezing and stuttering of the game (when switching but especially when summoning) make it VERY frustrating, and massively detract from the otherwise immersive experience (think: regularly breaking the tension or atmosphere for as much as thirty seconds or more during an awesome moment of gameplay). Frankly, it's so annoying that, unless it gets fixed fairly soon (or an announcement is made to say it's being worked on) I'll consider petitioning Sony for a refund.
Me and my girlfriend are enjoying this game a lot. We first played it on the Steamdeck in coop mode (this is possible with a start command). We were able to play it with 720p and minimum graphics in splitscreen for about 25h without any big issues. There have been some crashes but the gameplay overall was very smooth.
When we learned that BG3 will have a cross save for the PS5 we were happy to continue our game on the PS5. On September 4th we immediately started the game once we were able to and tried to continue our journey. Right after the start we noticed that the game is freezing constantly when we tried to change the charracter. The combat is even worse.
I thought it might had something to do with my M2-SSD that I have installed to my PS5 and installed the game on. But after transferring the game onto the internal PS5 SSD there was no change.
Because we have seen the amazing graphics and effects on PS5 we couldn't get back to our mushy graphics on Steamdeck anymore. So I placed my gaming PC into our living room on our dining table. The last week we played at this spot and it is quite annoying that we are not able to play the game on the PS5.
In Germany the early access version (Digital Deluxe) costs 80€ what is a lot if you already spend 50€ for the PC version.
Today is the official release for the PS5 - are there any news from Larian regarding a new patch? Is there any recognition for the bad split screen performance on PS5 at all?
Same here, after a month of playing with my wife on the PC version, we continued our cross-save (from act 2) in our brand new PS5. Single player working pretty smooth, but split screen is unplayable, switching characters or making any actions freeze the game 5-10 seconds every time.
Same, 20h in, still in Act1 but the freezes while swapping char or even basic action during combat is becoming unbearable. Summoning or mirror images straight out freezes the game for a minute.
Same thing here. We are 30h+ still in Act 1 and a few things freeze the game for like 2s. Swapping characters, summoning minions... We're doing our best to ignore it and just enjoy the rest of the game, but it got to the point where we don't see many things that happen in combat due to the freezes. The game also freezes forever if you try to sort your inventory while putting things inside containers on certain situations, but this is an engine bug that was also present on Divinity 2.
Just made an account here to confirm the same issue. Wife and I played on PS5 for about 12-15 hours and just got a little ways into the Underdark in Act 1. There are a solid 2 seconds of hitching/lag every single time we switch characters. Essentially unplayable in split-screen. It's was also occurring every time I cast Minor Illusion. We had to stop playing last night due to this issue. Larian please fix!
Did they release a PS5 patch today for the official release date? I haven't had a chance to download it and examine it yet. Some online articles are already saying it addresses performance problems in local multiplayer/split screen (the wording I've found is that it addresses the character-switching lags, but I'm hoping this also applies to the other sources of stuttering, summons and some illusions.)
The bug report form requires a screenshot or save file to be submitted. I may be reading into this too much, but if you try without a screenshot or save file it returns the rather sarcastic error message: "You are submitting a bug report. Please attach a file demonstrating the issue such as a save file or screenshot.").
However: 1 - Clearly a screenshot is useless for evidencing a bug of this nature... 2 - Furthermore as far as I am aware, you cannot copy individual saves of PS5 games off the PS5 to a USB in order to get the file onto a PC to upload it to their form. This feature is only available for PS4 games. I tried to see if there was a way around this - but as no solution was evident, even if it is possible its far from convenient...
Created an account to further lend weight to this really frustrating issue.
While the game ran fine in the first few hours, now we are 20+ hours into a playthrough, still in act 1 - the game hangs / freezes in split screen coop every single time without fail when:
* we use L2 to switch party members * split or group party members * allocate characters to people in the multiplayer menu * change turns in combat * cast a transformation effect spells * cast a summoning spell that adds a controllable unit like spirit weapon or an animal.
The freeze when summoning can last as long as 20 - 30 seconds. The game is great (!) however when you have two people doing all the above, it's really awful and barely playable in all honesty. It's making us instinctively not want to split party members when the game clearly intends us to do it for tactical reasons, not manage our or change gear because it requires character swaps, not change gear or do anything that requires switching between characters. We constantly find ourselves apologizing to the other because on of us switched characters while the other was doing something. Or we warn the other when we are about to summon etc...
If you have two or three characters casting a summoning spell at the start of a fight - you will summon (freeze for 20-30s), change turns (freeze for 2-3s), summon (freeze for 20-30s), change turns again (freeze for 2-3s) and then freeze again when you summon or transform. That's almost 2mins of freezing in the space of what should be 30s of gameplay - and the player is literally spending more time frozen than playing.
edit: they responded to my bug report within 5mins of it being submitted, even after the auto response coming in saying that responses may take longer than expected...They said its being looked into and to monitor social media.

They released a hotfix, I think it was yesterday of over 1gb that claimed to address this, but we (and others on reddit) noticed no measurable improvement in the character switch freezing during ps5 split screen coop. We've had to stop our playthrough and wait for it to be addressed as its ruining the game. The freeze can sometimes be longer than 20s and when you have two people...disappointing since we got it only to play split screen coop and purchased the deluxe edition specifically for early access.

Since I've continued a crosssave from my PC, I've uploaded the PC save, but you could upload a video as well. Even record it with your phone or something.

We're pushing through it and still managing to play somehow. But yeah it would be much better if it was fixed, it is such a great game that I don't want other people having the wrong impression because it wasn't polished enough.
I feel the same. Though, tbh, this issue -- the game halting and being unplayable for ~30 seconds every few minutes when you need to do something essential to gameplay -- seems more like a basic functionality issue, so I wouldn't call it a lack of polish. But I bet there has to have been SOMEONE at Larian/Sony who flagged this before release ... I just really hope it gets fixed soon.
On 20+ hours couch coop on PS5 becomes totally unplayable because of this freezes — each character change freezes game for 7-10 sec. Opening inventory adds laggs to both players. We passed 25 hours trying to endure this difficulties but we gave up (
By the way, if you log off your coop partner — performance becomes perfect once again, when you log in — all freezes and lags come back.
And it seems that release day hot fix made it even worse (or maybe we played several hours more) — other bug added to freezes — when your character stucks with no possibility to move or target anybody in turn based mode — but this fixes with reload.
Just created this forum account to pitch in on the discussion.
I'll start by giving a short description of the issue as I've been experiencing, even if it's already been described in this thread.
In split-screen mode and after quite a few hours played, the game starts freezing / stuttering upon: 1) switching between controlled characters outside of combat, 2) linking and unlinking characters outside of combat, 3) switching between enemies in combat (ameliorated by latest hotfix), 4) creating a new controllable model (i.e. summoning) or otherwise changing your own model (shapeshift, disguise self).
Yesterday it occurred to me that what *could* be causing the stutter is that the game, for some reason, is having trouble accessing the respective character's inventory items (and spells) and needs its sweet time to load it; I assumed this could be the case for several reasons: 1) seemingly, there is a discrepancy between the time periods it takes for the game to destutter for each character, i.e. one character 'loads' more quickly than another; 2) inventory is the one thing (alongside spell lists, as I realised this morning) that grows proportionally to your time played, and it is the one thing (again alongside spell lists) that is disproportionate between different characters - your main will, naturally, have more items in their inventory if you play as them more often outside of combat; 3) spell and action lists, as mentioned in point 2 above, also grow proportionally to time played but also at a different pace for different classes; this is seemingly confirmed by my observations that spellcasters take *a lot* more time to destutter than melee characters.
I have thus far only managed to test my inventory hypothesis, and while the issue does not disappear completely, it is drastically ameliorated for characters whose entire inventory I've dumped back to camp.
I assume the issue is not entirely fixed due to said character's spell list - so I'm going to have to respec later today to test whether a smaller spell list leads to shorter freezing/stuttering.
I really hope Larian is reading this thread, because this issue needs to be resolved quickly.
I wanted to jump in and add more to this thread too, there's a slew of UI issues I've noticed so far in addition to frame rate drops:
- Frame rate drops & freezes well documented in this thread. - No dynamic split screen, which I think is part of what's causing freezing issues. Combat needs to get back to DOS2, merged into one shared screen. - Certain fire effects do not display fire, just embers on the ground. Is this intentional? It can be extremely hard to see on a split screen which is forced into a small resolution. - UI is squished because inventory is shared; DOS2 had individual inventory so you got large, easy to see UI. - Books, letters, text are almost impossible to read; they're extremely small. - No encumbrance or weight displayed for party, and on certain items gone completely (picked up a Mind Flayer on accident at the start of the game, he had no encumbrance weight associated with him). - PS5 overlay stuck in top left, I keep seeing my screen name, its clipping through certain game texts.

I imagine if you are running builds that rely less on summons / transformations, so you only have the shorter character freezes it might be tolerable. Also depends how far you are I think. We're 40 hours in and it got progressively worse, but we were pushing through before then. Agree its a great game, but for us this definitely falls somewhere at the border or playable vs unplayable, and of course that will be different for different people. Its absolutely not what I would expect from a console release though where the expectations are that the hardware should be perfectly capable of running all software launched on it.

The form I completed and uploaded to wouldn't take video files and indicated save file or screenshot. Also the size limit is 64mb, not gonna get a video off the PS5 with that size restriction given that it can record only in 4k or 1920x1080 with little control over the compression.

So, I just tried dumping my iventory and respeccing to level 1.
I could switch from Shadowheart to the dumped character with a VERY SLIGHT delay, under 1 second, while switching back to Shadowheart dragged the game to a halt for 4-ish seconds. The issue was not eliminated for the dumped custom character, it just gets several magnitudes better.
I'd like to ask that others try this out. If anything, it will confirm whether I'm a madman or not.
* we use L2 to switch party members * split or group party members * allocate characters to people in the multiplayer menu * change turns in combat * cast a transformation effect spells * cast a summoning spell that adds a controllable unit like spirit weapon or an animal.
Great list! My fiancee and I have been having freezes in all of these situations as well. Some of them are short (<5 seconds) like when switching characters, but some of them like summoning during combat can seem to take at least 10 seconds. All of the small freezes was half of why we just gave up last night playing in split screen and just started passing the controller back and forth (The other half was due to a cursor glitch where we couldn't target enemies, cast spells, jump, or sometimes even move in combat until we restarted the app). The small freezes really have put a damper on the experience because they're seeming to get worse and happen allllll of the time.
I really appreciate the effort you're all putting into giving detailed descriptions on the issues. I've seen a lot of negativity and toxicity in the forums lately (still better than other places such as steam discussions lol) which makes me think Larian might not read the forums and only the bug reports.
I did want to submit a few reports but yeah, it asks for the save files which just creates a barrier for us on ps5.
Did anyone had a bug that a camp supplies bag appears on the floor but can't be interacted with when the 2nd player connects?

They may have changed the attachment requirement, I just submitted another report without one. PS5 version.
Is there any reason why the game is forced into Quality Mode when split screen ?
Enabling Performance mode seems that it could be a good temporary fix for these issues.
The game does not go into quality mode during split screen. Switching between quality and performance does not appear to have any effect on the freezing.
I also tried dumping all inventory from my characters and resetting their level and it did not have any noticeable effect in the freeze, still lasts 3-4 sec
Reading all that I can only confirm and beg Larian to act on what is happening to split screen coop performance.
I'm playing with my wife and we're like ~45 hours in. It's haaaard. So many actions cause lags (it was all mentioned here) and we endure because we love the game and story so much, but definitely, the experience is not great because of it. If it would be any other game I think we would drop it and wait for a fix instead of pushing through it.
Lack of a dynamically merging camera is also a huge miss, especially after playing Divinity Original Sin 2, which had a great coop split screen experience.
Larian if you're reading this, please address performance issues ASAP. Having a merged camera would be such a great addition to couch coop too.
Adding another experience confirming the poor split screen performance.
About 20 hours in (just started Act2), and it's been bad since around hour 5.
Same actions that every one has been noting. It's been rough but playable, but it's getting noticeably worse as we progress. Might just drop split screen and do the controller hand off for a while. Not ideal, but workable.

I completely understand. We've been talking if we should stop playing everyday now. The freezes in addition to the cursor bug that only goes back to normal with saving and loading the game again takes so much time. We're playing everyday after work and it feels we're attempting to play a game our hardware doesn't support which might end up just being poor optimization on their proprietary engine. I really wanted to know if they are considering fixing it, it would motivate us to push forward.

This is where we're at too. We'll likely stop using split screen and just pass the controller if we continue.
The cursor/targeting issue is almost a bigger problem than the freezing since saving and reloading can take over a minute (not to mention the pain of trying to complete a combat encounter with it active).
edit: I don't know if Larian reads this but I want to add just how disappointing it is. This is my wife's first CRPG and we were having a blast, the story, characters, combat is all great. And that's why these issues are so frustrating. If the game wasn't good we would have quit by now.
Last night my fiancée was playing as shadowheart and summoned a guardian of faith, and I timed a 33 second freeze. It seems to just be getting worse as we progress and that long of a complete freeze (without crashing) is likely the worst I’ve encountered in any game.
Experiencing all the same laggy, freezing issues mentioned here on split screen couch co-op, but none of the issues when not in multi. Playing from a fresh game PS5, not an imported file. These problems worsened after about 20 hrs of gameplay.
We're trying our best to power through and play despite it but it's really testing our patience. Definitely can't play the whole game like this...
My wife and I also bought this game strictly to play split-screen co-op, like with DOS and DOS-2... the lag has been excruciating after the first 15 hours or so, and we have basically stopped our playthrough; the lag we could deal with (mostly) but the being unable to target things/move characters in combat bug that started happening as well was just the icing on the cake.
It looks like the pc version is ahead of PS5 as far as patches/bug fixes goes... does anyone know if the split screen on the pc version also has the delay-lag , or is that a PS5 Exclusive feature?

You can save/load during combat, don't know if you are aware. Same thing for dialogues.

My split screen pc experience has been more or less flawless. My pc is extremely beefy though. My guess is that the same systems govern the switching of characters etc but a new I9 processor just doesn’t flinch at the demand. They probably need to find a way to preload things in the background in unused ram or something just in case you summon anything you have the option to. It’s just not optimized well for the ps5s slower hardware.
Found out that the targeting bug often happens when the game freezes while your character is in the middle of a jump. For example if one split screen character jumps and at the same time the other split screen switches companions simultaneously making the game freeze four a few seconds, the character who jumped will get the targeting bug. I've tried this a few times and it's not 100% but is reproducable
Jump forces the cursor mode, so that makes me wonder if it’s an issue with freezing while doing something that requires the cursor, which might explain why we’ve been have this issue so much. So maybe today we’ll try to never switch characters or anything to freeze the game while the other is jumping, targeting enemies with the cursor, finding a location to summon or throw, etc.
I already responded to the other thread about this in more detail. But, my god, the game has become unplayable in coop on my end. It seems to just be PS5 players experiencing this? I appreciate all the tips and ideas shared in this thread though. I may try the idea of taking slow turns with actions. It makes sense that my husband and I doing actions at the same time might be causing the cursor glitch with jumping and combat (obviously the combat being the real game breaker for us, since it renders characters unusable). I'll try it and if it is consistent enough, I'll include it in a report ticket when I get to submitting one properly. My husband is not a creature of patience so this probably wont be enough for us to keep playing, sadly.
Hoping praying they find a way to mend this sooner than later!
Made an account here too to echo these issues and repeat that they are inexcusable. If this was Blizzard we’d already have 100s of videos on YouTube blasting them and asking for refunds.
Wife and I started playing and it was fine for the first 10 hours or so.
It has become COMPLETELY unplayable with us now that we are getting closer to Act 2 start. This is PS5 co op, fully updated everything, clean device, no issues in other games.
Summoning a pet or mage hand or anything that adds an entity to your party creates a 20s+ lag/freeze. You will stare at your partner and talk about how maybe Diablo 4 was actually a better co op experience. Ouch.
Changing the character you are controlling lags 5-10s every time. That applies to manually switching, ending and starting turns in combat, etc.
Every time you both log in, companion ownership and chests get bugged. Player 1 has to drop the companion to camp. Player 2 needs to reparty them. Items go into a void and then appear in a random chest, usually not the original owner’s.
GAME BREAKING: something is causing us to lose the ability to target movement with the controller stick. You will just not be able to jump, target things on the ground, or move properly at all. You can only used range attacks by toggling the enemy you have highlighted. This seems to happen every time the player is controlling an entity that despawns or dies. It also happens when you are in combat randomly. GG bug that requires reloading the whole game app, which then triggers all the bugs above.
As you can see by matching this up, by the time couch co op players reach the end of Act 1 - they will literally be spending more time frozen and frustrated with lag than playing the game.
We hope bringing more visibility to this issue will encourage Larian to address it.

I’ll add that I think the bug occurs most often when both players are simultaneously taking their turns in combat. Then:
Player A is not currently in control of their character due to being mid jump, character swap, or desummoning a mage hand/minion.
Player B triggers an action that causes a freeze - switching their character, summoning something, etc.
Player A’s character then loses the ability to target things other than with the left/right pad. I don’t think they can move either.
Anything that freezes the game such was (change of characters, end of turn) is really likely to create the controller bug. Noticed today that whenever my spouse would change character and my active was attacking I would return to a bugged target.
Interesting theory with the cursor but I’m still wondering if it’s an inventory thing. Most of us seem to be saying it gets worse with 10+ hours.
The worst delays seems to take place when adding a minion to the party during combat (avoiding spoilers, so think necromancy and raising the dead). Could be that the game now needs to query the new party member’s inventory.
Anyway back to D4 for us today (couch co-op). I even suggested loading up Divinity…
Just joining in to confirm that couch co-op split screen is unplayable. My husband and I are devastated... We own the Deluxe edition on PS5 only, we bought the game specifically for PS5 so we could play together. And we can't, because the freezing is horrible, and we're even playing in Performance mode. We've already submitted a bug report, and I posted a separate thread on the subject. If it's about demanding visuals, we are ready and willing to have it reduced for the sake of performance. We love the story, the characters, the mechanics, but the persistent freezes suck out all the joy from our playthrough. We stopped near the end of Act 1 because we simply can't take it anymore.
Sad part is there isnt really any communication about it afaik. It's a bit embarassing to release split screen in this state when if you played more than 2h it's pretty apparent how bad it is (and have been since early access release)
Has anyone gotten a bug report reply or has Larian said anything publicly about these issues?

This. 0 indication that they have awareness of these issues or care.. the community support is lacking. They’re over a week into PS5 early release and most PS5 co op players are experiencing this.
Has anyone tried deleting all their saves but the most recent? Including other characters? That's my next theory but thought I'd ask before going through with it.
Same problem here, I bought the game to play split screen with my girlfriend and the game becomes impossible.
first game until you reach underdark and the delays in the actions that comment begin. We start another game, we reach underdark (about 15-20 hours of play) and the same thing happens again.
I have tried all kinds of solutions to fix it but there is no way, if I load a game that has 5-6 hours of play it goes well, but as soon as it has more, this error appears and there is hardly any information about this on the internet, nor is it They say to fix it, we have to wait, although we bought the game solely and exclusively to play it both of us.
I bought a PS5 just to play this game on a big screen tv without having to redo our computer set up. Don't have anything new to add that others haven't said yet. In the same pain as everyone else. I could write for an hour about how much I love the Baldurs Gate franchise, Larian studios games, and this wonderful marriage they have. But need to step away from the game until they get this fixed. I have 40 hours in but would wager if you added up all the time my wife and I spent watching the screen load it would be almost 5 hours.
Today (9/10/23) was the worst day by far. The freezes went from 10-20 seconds to closer to 30-40. And we never got the cursor glitch until today where it happened four times.
The same problem here! It's impossible to play after around 20 hours of split screen game A lot of big freezes and controller bugs (cursor go wild and we can't point any targets). Such a disappointment.
Bumping this thread, because this is imho the most problematic issue right now that needs fixing asap. It started out great, but now I have the feeling that my PS5 will explode when I cast minor illusion. The freezes are crazy.
Just registered an account to add my vote to this problem. We are playing with my wife and have exactly the same problem. We love the game a lot but it became just unplayable
Everyone should submit a bug report as well as post here and on other spaces like Reddit, Discord, etc. this is an inexcusable flop for a game release that was ALREADY delayed. Many of you (myself included) bought deluxe versions to play early with our loved ones. This just got us to this “unplayable freeze and lag” point earlier.
I received an automated “we got your ticket” response today. That’s a start.
Please use your PS5 recording function to record the horrendous lag and gameplay. Export it to YouTube and post it so we can maximize the amount of people talking about how buggy PS5 co op is. It will warn others to NOT buy this game until it’s fixed, hurting their profit and forcing Larian to prioritize this fix.
Also created an account to regiter my complaint. There are other little bugs but this one is really annoying me and my wife. Changing characters, summoning, passing your turn... these are all actions that you do frequently in the game and it is taking 10-20 seconds for me. I remember that in Divinity 2 there were some small freezes when summoning but nothing compared to what we are experiencing here. The game is amazing but this is really starting to bother us and I'm thinking about stop playing until this is resolved.
Created account and submit bug for the same issue.
Wife and I have fallen in love with the game but it's become totally unplayable towards the end of act 1 in split screen. Split screen mode is one of the main draws for many players on the PS5 and it was implemented incredibly well in Divinity.
PLEASE Larian - acknowledge that you're looking into this at least! We want to play the game together!
I'm just adding my name to the list of people who are experiencing the issue. My wife and I tried to ignore the issues until about the end of act 1. The game is unplayable now. I reported it as a bug.
Just wanted to echo what everybody else has been saying. Game ran fine for the first 5-8 hours, then got slowly worse. We are about 15-20 hours in now, in the underdark, and it went from annoying to really bad. Huge freezes constantly, cursor bugging out. Hope Larian fixes this soon (or at least responds to let us know when we can expect a fix).
Also wanted to do my part and report the same issues others are experiencing. About 20 hours in, my wife and I started experiencing problems that seem to be getting significantly worse with time. Started in combat with minor lag when switching characters, but progressively got worse to a nearly unplayable point, unfortunately. The first time it became difficult to play, we were fighting some gnolls as a part of the "Find the Missing Shipment" quest. After turning that quest in, we noticed it get MUCH worse when we took a trip to Auntie Ethel's place in the bog. Doesn't seem to be location dependent, rather it seems to be getting worse overall regardless of where our characters are in the world, ESPECIALLY in combat, when switching characters, or when summoning familiars. We were having a really good time with the game before it started acting up, but the lag has made it pretty painful to try to play. Hoping for a fix, because the game itself is awesome when you can actually manage to play it.

Just registered an account to add to the discussion. I've been experiencing the same lag/freezing issues. I have sent out a bug report as well. Ps5 split screen is unplayable from 15-20 hours on. I had bought the ps5 version only for the couch coop experience, but it seems that's not an option for now. Luckily I had bought EA a long time ago and had Baldurs on PC as well. I hooked up my pc to the tv and I'm doing split screen from there. Totally unconvenient, but it gets the job done. Awful performance by the PS5 version, it shouldn't have been released with split screen in this state.
Also made an account just to post a thread about it and raise awerness. Having same exact problems as mentioned above but for us it was a bad experience from the get-go, even though it gets worse as we advance through the game.
But even the first half hour felt janky and laggy. And the poor targeting of lootable/interactive items gave a bad feel already in the room where you rescue shadowheart.
But as you all stated, 15-20 hours into the game and its not playable.
Same here. When things like a summon is used or a turn ends and someone enters or exits camp, the game freezes for about 10+ seconds. The state that ps5 splitscreen co-op was released in is really not acceptable for a 70+ dollar game
Finally gave up today. Played 2h and spent half the time between freezes or save reloading to fix cursor bug. Unbearable and honestly embarassing that there is still no news about the problem.
Same here, 20 h into the game with wife and all the lags described before happened to me as well. Constantly reloading for cursor fix, huge freezes when switching characters, summoning new additional ones and after each kill of an enemy. Literally unplayable in current state. Larian acknowledge the problem!
The fact that the performance starts getting like this only 15 hours in is something that even if was possible to get a refund on the PlayStation you would be unable to do so because of how long it takes for it to start appearing.
I don't know, the more we play the more the magic disappears for me. I'm starting to focus on the flaws of the game more and more. It sucks.
Wooo. Its nice to know that we aren't the only ones experiencing this crazy lag. We're only 11 hours in and its rough summoning things, or changing characters for split screen co-op on the PS5. I can't imagine for folks who made it to act II.
For Larian, come on folks--we know its early days. I work in software--can't imagine what you guys are dealing with at the moment, but at least say something about this. Its obviously a problem. Give us a timeline or something--anything really.
Bad news Guys, this has been the issue since launch on PC.
Zero acknowledgement from Larian.
Yes, this is kind of the reason I've given up hope on the ps5 version. They haven't been able to fix it on PC, it would seem the only way out is through brute force (huge CPU and GPU), for now. I believe they will place their bet on cross-play.

For sure, it's super sporadic, I'm rocking an old 970 and i5 4690k and it runs just fine single player at ultra everything.
The second I hit split screen the whole thing tanks out 70% of the time, the other 30% it's fine, no issues at all for hours.
Made an account to lend my strength to this noble cause.
So they did an "update" last night and it fixed nothing as far as I can tell, same story as most of you. It's hard to find a decent split screen game these days so this game seemed like a literal game changer, my better half and I got the early access witch was bloody expensive in Australia. Around 12 to 13 hrs in we got our first freeze, now just about everything we do causes the game to freeze. Dose anyone know what the latest patch was even supposed to do? How do we get our split screen voices heard?
The duration of the freezes appears to get better after a certain point in the game (end of Act 2). Freezes fo from 8 seconds to 2 seconds. It's a breath of fresh air for now, but I expect it to continue getting worse again as the game goes on
It's really a shame that they sell the game (€80) and one of its MAIN functions doesn't work.
But the worst of all is that it doesn't seem like they are going to fix it, I don't see anything on Twitter, YouTube, or anywhere, only here and on reddit.
We send them bug reports and we all request it from Larian (there are many of us with this problem) they have to be aware of this and they do nothing.
The game is a 10, but unplayable in split screen, I will request a refund without much hope.

Came to say that me and my wife have the same problems on PS5.

Made an account just to support this, perfect summary of the problem.
All these reviews that gave the game glowing accolades and 10/10s and not one managed to mention that splitscreen co op is basically broken/unplayable. Lots of people bought this game for co-op. If i knew it was like this, i never would have bought it.
Bought early access on PS5 September 2nd with the sole intention of playing split screen with my wife. I have no intention to play by myself as that is not why I bought the game.
I will be requesting a refund tonight from Sony. Not sure if they’ll allow it, I’m within their 14 day refund limit but I’d rather try for a refund than see $80 and 100GB doing nothing on my PS5.
Really sad stuff, especially with all the great reviews and hype. Feels pretty shady to receive all these high scores and reviews and one of the best features of the game (couch co-op) is an embarrassment.

Can you update the thread when you have heard back from Sony please? I agree that the fact none of this has been reflected in hardly any reviews is very very strange. There are a couple of articles noting some issues with ps5 coop, but then note only lower than expected FPS - which tbh is the least of our worries.
There needs to be more content creators posting footage of this issue, but given that some like Mortismal are being sponsored by Larian I doubt they have much incentive to draw attention to such awful performance.
Do tell us how it goes with the refund. I started the process today, I don't have high hopes, but it's worth a shot. Glowing reviews are deserved, most people play this as a single player game, and it's great at that. The advertised option of split-screen gaming is totally misleading, though.
This needs more visibility and its a great game but split screen for Ps5 is just broken and really takes the fun out of the game. I submitted bug reports already. 0 reaction or Larian is really quiet about this.

Did some research because we were considering too but if you already downloaded and played the game it seems you're already out of their refund policy.

Unfortunately it appears too specific that even Digital Foundry didn't get it. They "tested" walking around and such and said it was playable and that performance was fine. Really disappointing.
Yep- the chat agent told me because I played it I can’t get a refund and they told me to reach out to Larian Support and then basically shut off chat…
Larian should be ashamed to sell a product so broken. Happy for all the single players and online players but couch co-op is rare these days so to offer it up as a feature that is just plain broken seems like false advertisement to me.
I don’t get how they messed couch co op so badly. Divinity Original Sin 2 was near flawless in couch co op. Did they not even playtest local co op? Did no reviewers play in local co op? The freezes and lag happen pretty early on and remain throughout. I find it hard to believe they were not aware how unplayable local co op is
My husband and I love Larian too much to ask for a refund, we will wait and hope they will fix this. It should be fixable - after all, DOS 2 worked perfectly in split screen, this is basically the same type of game mechanics-wise, but with beefier graphics.
For one, they should disable the Quality mode for the split screen and just go with Performance. I mean, we've initially selected Performance in the first place, but apparently the game defaults to Quality immediately when you enter split screen (which is ridiculous). And since the game freezes more frequently as you progress, this insinuates some kind of memory leak, unoptimized scripting or stacking conditions (I'm comparing these problems to Skyrim, but it may not be the same thing).
Whatever it is, I still have faith in them. They have provided unprecedented experience and entertainment for us in the past, we have a friggin' Platinum trophy in DOS 2 on PS4.
We're pushing through it and still managing to play somehow. But yeah it would be much better if it was fixed, it is such a great game that I don't want other people having the wrong impression because it wasn't polished enough.
I don't know how far you are in the playthrough, but it's far far more than a polish issue. Everyone has different tolerance levels of course, but I think by any reasonable metric this would not be considered playable. At 50 ish hours we are freezing for upwards of 40 seconds on some actions, 10s on every switch, every turn change, sometimes several targeting bugs PER battle requiring reloads, which take the better part of a minute.
And you not wanting people to get the wrong impression? The wrong impression comes from the lack of coverage this issue has been given - no major review outlet has covered it even people specifically assessing split screen coop, and even those commenting on act3 performance. This seems to be a pretty universal experience and not limited to specific people's consoles or installations - so they must have been aware of it when commenting. That is the wrong Impression.
But don't get me wrong, the single player game is fantastic. It's just that many people, especially on ps5 will have purchased it specifically for local coop - and Larian have clearly abused their stellar reputation for split screen coop in DOS2 and intentionally covered this issue up on ps5 prior to release, which is really scummy.

theoretically a refund should be possible. You don't get a refund when already purchased and used unless the game is not working properly.

SHAMEFUL!
that's not OK. Sony is responsible for the products they sell on their online store to be at least working properly. This is what happened when Cyberpunk 2077 was released on PS4, the game was such a buggy mess that they had to refund a lot of people and the game was taken off the online store for a long while.
I told them the game wasn’t working properly and they just told me the policy doesn’t allow a refund and then shut off chat. Obviously not a big enough problem like cyberpunk because it’s only affecting split screen.
I dropped some comments on a handful of Larian and BG3’s tweets but it probably won’t matter.

Yes to all this. There is no way they didn't knew about the split screen shitty performances and the fact they will not even acknowledge the problem anywhere is even more scammy. There isn't a mention to it anywhere and i've yet to receive any answer to the bug report from more than a week ago appart from the automated message.
Made an account to post, the split screen performance on ps5 has degraded significantly as we have progressed the game, We are approaching the end of act 1 and it is borderline unplayable. I have submitted 2 tickets in the last 24 hours about this but have yet to receive a reply. The game is fantastic split screen issues aside but the lack of communication from Larian is frustrating. Either inform us of a timescale for fixes or if it can't be fixed let us know so we can apply for refunds. I've bought this game to play co-op with my wife and it's frustrating to experience, especially since DOS and DOS2 had split screen well balanced.

This 100% It is not the masterpiece I thought it to be. IT is a great game potentially but no feedback from larian or atleast acknowledging this issue is quite frustrating. They havent responded to my email as well.
Everyone - please use the PS5 screen recording option to record videos and post them here via YouTube or other streaming service.
I am going to create a video detailing all the bugs and Larians lack of communication. It is concerning because this has been the state for PC co op since it released.
Once the video is created or your videos are shared here, I will forward to all major content creators. I am sure they would love the controversy clicks, and it will bring more attention to the issue.
I'm starting to think we shouldn't expect a fix any time soon. They had to have known about this issue before release. Some PC players say the problem exists there too on weaker hardware, so they've surely known about this since at least August.
My guess is the problem is caused by something fundamental to the game's design. Given that the coverage/reviews are overwhelmingly positive, they have no incentive to make massive changes to underlying design that could affect the stellar single player experience.
They are likely silent because they can't promise a fix.
Just speculation, informed by my decades of experience as a software dev.
Pretty bummed. Also annoyed that I spent the extra $10 so our coop experience could become unplayable more quickly.

This is all perfectly logical. As consumers it is our duty to make our issues known to other customers.

The problem isn't graphical so either quality/performance doesn't make a difference. It's an optimization issue and the ps5 processor can't handle it.
Edit: There's a comment on the Digital Foundry video talking about the freezes and I recommend everyone where to give a like to it, maybe they see it and decide to test it further.

Good spot re the comment on the DF video. Still unbelievable that DF didn't acknowledge the freezing issue even once. It's like they've all be paid by Larian to keep quiet. The longer they remain silent about this the more I'm losing appreciation for them as a developer. So sad, they used to feel like the white Knights of the modern gaming world...now it feels like they will let their success turn them into the next blizzard.
Share your video link here when you have it so we can help push it out. I have a clip of the issue saved on the ps5 but don't have have a yt channel to upload it to. Happy to send over the file if it can help you make content about the issue though.
Would be great if some of the major content creators did a piece about this.
Created an account to add to this as well. My wife and I bought this game, specifically on PS5, to play the game together as we greatly enjoyed DOS and DOS2. We now show 60 hours on our save file. Got to some point in Act 2. When it got to the point where I was verbally cursing the game more than we were playing, it only made sense to stop playing until the issue is fixed. If only it were possible to refund a game after struggle-bussing your way through 60 hours of it... This needs to get addressed.
Well until now we “only” had the massive slowdowns and freezes. But after playing tonight we encountered that god awful cursor disappearing thing and had to reload. Then it happened again in the middle of a massive battle so that entire 40 min battle was all for nothing since we couldnt move. Turned the game off then.
The shit is unplayable. Larian needs to address how broken ps5 couch co op is. The radio silence is inexcusable. It’s embarrassing that it was released on ps5 in this state

I understand your frustration because we're all going through the same thing but let's not get ahead of ourselves. This is an issue that appears after many hours of playing and specifically on local co-op. It seems to me it lacked testing on these circumstances and it might not be an easy fix. My disappointment is the lack of acknowledgement. I'd appreciate if someone that submitted a bug response and got a reply to share here.
It’s embarrassing that it was released on ps5 in this state
You can save and reload mid fight to solve the cursor issue. Isn't ideal but at least you won't lose any progress in the future.
This person says he played 30h with his wife and had no problems. Maybe there is something we do other than getting more spells/items that makes it degrade in time like, getting more origin companions or something. Would try to play while only recruiting 2 for example but i can't be bothered given how Larian has been silent so far anyway.

I made this post on Reddit as well (https://reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/s/dmbuH8AoMj) yesterday with a screenshot of this forums thread list when I noticed there were 4-5 separate threads on this issue at the same time in the most recent threads. Someone there also noted they had no issues and had reached the underdark. Tbh given how widespread the issue seems to be and that there are a number of Larian supporters who view this as barely an issue and will jump to their defence regardless of how bad things are, I'm not sure how much credence to give to such reports.
But I guess it would be interesting to see if some variable might be the cause. Maybe save file numbers?
Everyone - please use the PS5 screen recording option to record videos and post them here via YouTube or other streaming service.
I am going to create a video detailing all the bugs and Larians lack of communication. It is concerning because this has been the state for PC co op since it released.
Once the video is created or your videos are shared here, I will forward to all major content creators. I am sure they would love the controversy clicks, and it will bring more attention to the issue.
That's a good idea, will do so as soon as I get the chance.
I got to chat with a sony customer support rep, they asked me to record videos using the ps5 with these issues and send it to them. They added that this would probably "take time" (read: not gonna happen). Will post how it goes, however.
I completely agree on the fact that Larian was aware of this issue, but it being mainly a single player game with online capabilities, reviewers didn't focus on co-op for longer than a few minutes. Regarding comments (reddit, twitter) about the co-op working properly: they are pretty much all one-liners and sound like bullshit to me. The Ps5 has only one hardware configuration, so the chance of everyone running into the same bugs is immense. The implementation of split screen in BG3 seems to be "we'll just split the screen in two and run two games at the same time, let the cpu handle it lol". In a market where every instance of multiplayer is heading towards online gaming, using resources to have a proper local coop seems counterintuitive if not for loyalty points from their consumers (mainly DOS).
Working around the issue, as in trying to send items back to camp or recruiting less characters feels like a lost battle. It all comes down to some sort of CPU bottleneck I guess. I have a very high end PC that I use for work training machine learning models and it runs very well in split screen but it sometimes stutters at the very same places as the ps5 version. Granted, the freezes last a split second, but it goes to show that even with overpowered hardware there is a clear optimization problem.
Also, I have now been playing in split screen co-op for at least 20 hours on PC and I have to say that, even without freezing and lagging, the fact that the screen never merges like it did in DoS2 is extremely bothersome after a while. It's very hard to track where you are and where you are going and have to use the map very frequently while exploring. If the screen merge can't be implemented, I'd rather have cross-play tbh

Spending another 70/80€ to partially "fix" their broken game only benefits them. I surely wont buy a second copy of it just to be able to somewhat play the game, this sounds really backwards to me atleast.
Did you try to empty your inventory at the firecamp and make a new check? In other games i had similar problems with full inventory and a lot of saves ...
So an update on me and my Gfs progress and how the game "fixed" It self. We finished act 2, And by the end of act 2 we noticed that it was improving. By the time we started Act 3 the issue was completely gone. What I did differently was go to settings and limit my quick save and Auto saves to 2 each. We havent encountered this bug eversince.

Interesting... We'll try this and see if it improves, I'm still in ACT1. I actually barely uses autosaves so it is not going to be a hassle to me. If it does get better I'll give an update

Worth a try i guess. I think some people had tried deleting all the saves except from main one and it didn't do anything so it would be weird if it fixed it but you never know !
Keep in mind we had to suffer through the end of ACT 1 and most of Act 2 with this issue. So I'm not sure if what I did was the solution or it just fixed itself by the time we reached Act 3.
For what it’s worth, our game freezing also improved drastically around the end of act 2 or beginning of act 3. No idea why, but for example switching characters started taking less than half a second instead of multiple seconds. Also haven’t had the cursor issue as much. We both noticed and commented how much better it’s running but we have no good explanation for it.

Can you explain what you mean by “at the campfire”? Does that make any difference, like do you mean destroy the items?
My wife wants to hoard all the books, could we send them “to camp” instead?

Yes, there was this idea floating around that you could improve the problem by sending the books to the camp and store them there instead of your own inventory. I tried this, and it didn't work at all.
Confirmation on the issue fixing itself by the end of act2 would be a ray of hope, I will switch back to ps5 when I finish act2 so I can check this out.
It's been floating around that too many quicksave files may be a cause - just wanted to dispel this. Just got home from work. Loaded up our run, deleted all but a new perma save, closed the game, rebooted and loaded that save, the issue as as bad as ever. Counted almost 10s per character switch in camp.
Same, spent most of our evening gaming time doing the same: purging inventory and saves. Made no difference.
Is there really no actual response from Larian? Sounds like they are hiding it until all the failed console releases are out. Super dissatisfied in this company. Certainly won’t trust them again.
Same, all the good will from the divinity games has been used up after this fiasco. Definitely not trusting them to deliver functional couch co op in the future no matter how many glowing reviews they get (which suspiciously dont mention the unplayable state of ps5 co op).
They knew splitscreen was unplayable and still marketed it and released it in this state. And still are not making a peep or acknowledging the issue more than a week since release. They are laying low hoping it blows over. Very grifter-like tbh.
I'm seconding the experience with the game running *exceptionally* well in Act 3 - any semblance of microstutter is entirely gone, and I am VERY happy with how it plays right now. I'm reporting it to Larian first thing.
I believe act 3 wipes the internal game memory clean of all the corpses and items littering the world. Pretty clear that this issue is related to the memory growth of keeping track of all the stuff since it gets worse over time.
It doesn't happen in single player, so I suspect there's a piece of crap code running a "cleanup" check or something on character switch in multiplayer split screen. Given it doesn't happen in single player this should be pretty straightforward to debug.
Happy to offer my own services here free of charge if anyone at Larian would like to pay attention to this. I do this kind of debug for a living. PLEASE let me help to make this wonderful game playable again with my wife!

Bless you, your comment nearly brought tears to my eyes...
I have no idea how people manage to even get to the Act 3 in split screen with all the freezing, we're stuck at the end of Act 1 (in Adamantine Forge, to be precise) and it's impossible to do anything without getting a migraine. Whatever action we do, aside from just walking around, it freezes. Since you've mentioned the cleanup check, I think you're on to something there, because we've explored Act 1 thoroughly so far, I don't think there's a nook and cranny we didn't delve into on our way - hence the 50+ hours of gameplay to this point. So all that info is basically stored in our save or something, and it's like information overload? I'm not knowledgeable about these things so I'm just wild guessing.
Without wanting to rain on peoples one ray of hope, if the issue is cleanup of persistent corpses etc...doesn't that suggest that the issue should re-emerge as people get further into act3?
So I tried to bring more visibility to our split screen issue by opening a topic on Reddit, but apparently the majority has taken it the wrong way. (The majority probably being single players who don't have the slightest inkling about our troubles.) Here's the Reddit topic in question: https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGat..._one_talking_about_unplayable_ps5_couch/ Some users claim that Larian is working on it - I have no idea whether they're just regular players or staff members (probably the former), so again, no real answer. Moreover, my comment that furthers the inquiry has been downvote-bombed for some inexplicable reason.
I feel like the BG3 gaming community is basically forcing us to shut up and just bear with it. I hope someone makes a thorough video about this issue or give it more visibility in any way possible, because our minority status is apparently drowning us.

I did get a reply to my initial big report from Larian (very quickly in fact - within 5mins of submission). Idk if the words felt carefully chosen or not, but they did not say they were working on it. Only the they were aware of the issue and encouraged me to monitor their social media channels.

Thank you Didsy, that's something. I didn't post a bug report but a feedback report instead, because I'm not sure that freezing counts as a bug, maybe I was overthinking it. So my reply was even more vague than yours. I hope they'll do something about it soon.

wow, that sucks. However, it's very reddit-y. Groupthink is pretty much the norm there, the "upvote-downvote" system encourages that and it's difficult to get concepts or ideas out there when the mods or a small, very active group is contrary to said concept. I believe posting videos of our bad experience with co-op on social media is the way to go. General video game stuff and larian's BG sites as well. I will be doing that over the weekend when I have some time to record videos on my ps5, starting with twitter.

Yes, unfortunately. I suspect it will get worse again in act 3 as the "stuff" in memory builds again.
And Yes Katarsi, the game keeps track of all the objects. Thats why when you leave an area and come back the stuff is still on the floor. The world is still burned/wet/acid/whatever.
I don't think the tracking of objects or memory usage itself is the issue because this works fine in single player. Theres a stark contrast between the switching in splitscreen. It's gotta be running a different segment of code somewhere.

I think the problem is that the game treats the split screen as two separate gameplays happening at the same time, so basically everything you do in single player is doubled in split screen - but the game attempts to stuff it in a single save. If this is the case, I can fully understand why it keeps choking. In DOS2 we were able to merge split screens into one, which means it was a single playthrough but with two players, and understandably everything was normal. BG3 on the other hand is literally splitting us in split screen instead of making us into a team. This is why dialogue options are repeated for every player, why we can't communicate with each other or to each other's followers and so on. The game is treating each player as the main player - and this is something that I think shouldn't be done in co-op. The main player (the account that had started the game) is the main protagonist, and the second player is basically their partner, support, and someone who should also have a say in major decisions (like in DOS 1 and 2). But we don't communicate at all. There's no merged split screen, there aren't things we truly do together. It's like one is completely unaware of the other's presence!

Made a channel just for this. We need to get some attention on this, because no one is talking about it, and Xbox players are about to be swindled too:
I have read that on September 21 they release a large patch.
The thing is that it doesn't say anything about the split screen, they say that it is because of act 3 in which the game does not go as well as in 1 and 2.
So if they solve it (which I don't have much hope for) it will either be on the 21st or it will be a couple of weeks later at best.

Excellent videos, thx for posting. Wife and I gave up at Moonrise due to lag so I haven’t had the chance to make any yet.
We should get a nice video together and get it on Asmongold or some other YouTubers radar.
We loaded up and tried to continue our 50h+ playthrough this evening - we found the problem to have gotten worse still. We managed to see freezing / 0fps periods in new contexts - summons disappearing for instance, as well as one player trying to level up while the other wasn't. Really bad lag spikes bordering on freezing on the lava filled areas of act 1 etc...
Good spot re the ign article - commented on their appalling qualification of the split screen as mostly okay. Damn they sound like estate agents talking about dumps.
Confirmation: Upon reaching act 3, the performance issues clear up completely. I played a few hours last night at the beginning of act 3 in split screen and the performance was similar to the performance when starting the game fresh on act 1.
I suspect there are issues with memory management as the world expands. Hence, reports of decreasing performance as you enter act 2 and greatly expanding the size of the world. Upon reaching act 3, previous areas of the world are no longer required to be kept in memory, and performance is restored.
So, if you're playing split screen and you're getting frustrated mid act2, I suggest swapping to single player and handing off the controller until you beat Act 2. Somewhat annoying to work around, but at least the beginning of act 3 has been playable.

I’ll be putting the game down until it’s fixed though. Not going to compromise with a video game. Maybe it’s out of spite and I’m just stubborn but this game doesn’t deserve my energy at this time.
As previously described multiple times: We are encountering the same problem in Baldur's Gate 3 on PS5. I've created an account specifically to give more weight to this issue, and I kindly request that others do the same. Larian must address this problem! The problem is the same as described above, and I'm relieved that we are not the only ones facing it. Initially, I thought we were just a minority playing this game in split-screen mode, but apparently, it's more widespread than I thought. This gives me hope that Larian is aware of this issue, if they aren't already. My wife and I have played DOS 1 and DOS 2 together, and it's baffling to us why the co-op experience in BG3 is such a disaster!
Here are the points that bother us, significantly limiting our experience and diminishing our enjoyment of the game:
1. Permanent Split-Screen: Even though we are playing "co-op," it doesn't feel that way. It's more like each of us is playing our own game, sharing the same screen. It often becomes chaotic and lacks clarity.
2. Simultaneous Turns in Combat: Why are we taking turns simultaneously in battles? While this might make for a faster gameplay experience, it leads to overlapping decisions and chaotic combat situations. We no longer make decisions together during individual turns as we did in DOS; instead, it feels like everyone is doing their own thing, hoping for a cohesive outcome.
3. Freezing Issues: Every time a creature is summoned, a summoned creature dies, an enemy dies, a character enters combat, a character is swapped, or a character accesses the inventory, the game freezes for about 3 to 15 seconds, depending on the situation. This issue has worsened significantly towards the end of Act One and the beginning of Act Two. We are quite patient, but this seriously impacts our gaming experience. My wife has even hesitated to summon creatures due to this problem.
4.Separate Dialogues and Cutscenes: Dialogues are only conducted individually, and cutscenes play out on one half of the screen. The other player has to quickly find and "listen" to the character speaking to understand what's happening together.
5.Party Management: Every time we start the game, we spend 5 minutes reassigning the party, which we miss from how it worked in DOS. The main character has to send the respective character to the camp, and the second player has to go to the camp to bring that character into their group. This process is cumbersome.
6. Overall Co-op Experience: All these issues combined result in the scenario I described above. While we are playing co-op, it doesn't feel like we are playing a game together. Instead, it feels like we are sharing a save file and occasionally communicating what's happening. Even though we are in the same world, most of the time, we don't feel like a team but rather two players sharing a screen. Please, Larian, address these problems! The co-op in DOS was perfect, and we want that experience back.
Thank you for your attention to these issues, and we hope to see improvements soon.
5.Party Management: Every time we start the game, we spend 5 minutes reassigning the party, which we miss from how it worked in DOS. The main character has to send the respective character to the camp, and the second player has to go to the camp to bring that character into their group. This process is cumbersome.
I agree with most of your points, but thought I'd help you with this one. Once both players have loaded into the game, have player 1 press 'Options' on the controller to bring up the menu, then select 'Multiplayer'. This allows you to shuffle party members around between active players. I've never had to go through the steps that you described.
I will say that occasionally the 'Multiplayer' option goes missing from the menu and does require a game restart to bring it back.
Act 3 is becoming a bit of a mess not only do freezes persist, we've also encountered hard crashes and a save file being corrupted (cause unknown, it had nothing to do with a crash) also character textures have started not loading correctly, faces and hair specially have a soft squishy look, I've also confirmed this happens on single player as well. Anyone on Act 3 having these issues?

Wow, thank you! I had already searched on the internet because I couldn't really imagine that this way we did was correct. However, several websites described this as the only way to change the party. It probably counted for the single player. In any case we tried it yesterday as you suggested and it worked. thanks for this! We also emptied our inventory in the camp and sold many things. I believe that freezing helped a bit
I had this issue pretty much resolve itself yesterday and I have no idea why. We had been fighting in the goblin camp the day before, and when we started the game up yesterday to finish, it was just better. I don’t think we restarted the game or anything. I initially thought it was because we were fighting indoors, but we had been trying the same fight the night before with all the issues. Plus it was still fixed after we went outside. There’s no freezing between character swaps anymore, and summoning freezes the game for about 5 seconds rather than 30. No idea why it fixed itself.

I haven't received any feedback from support so far. I highly doubt that the problem will resolve itself. The issue is still very prominent for us and is greatly affecting our enjoyment of the game. I somehow get the impression that Larian wants to offer the game on as many platforms as possible. Now the Mac is being added and later the Xbox. I hope they don't bite off more than they can chew with this as more issues may arise there as well. We need to continue being loud!
Most people already did report there 3 weeks ago as it was linked many times in this thread but so far haven't got any kind of reply to it. Plus if they didn't see this thread yet then that would be a totally other level of incompetency. Split-screen being such a little share of people they probably won't even acknowledge it before Xbox release when it adds more people having these problems.
I sent 2 reports and nothing... Let's keep waiting, after having bought a game that we can't play.
This Thursday they release an update, but I think it is so that it can be played on MAC, I don't think they will touch split screen, but hey, there is 1% hope hahaha

I reported it via the bug report form quite early in the thread and got a reply from their bug team almost immediately - it felt like their words were well chosen though. They didn't say they were working on it per se, only that they were aware of the issue, and told me to monitor their social media. So tbh I wouldn't hold up hope that this is a priority for them to fix - which is pretty awful given i'm sure they've been aware since well before launch. It actually makes me think that they know its a very difficult fix and may relate to the Ps5 simply being unable to run it smoothly with the what they have ported / optimized it and that there isn't an easy fix.
I wouldn't be surprised if this remained an issue now until they released an enhanced edition of the game. Not sure it would even be fixed then.
We've been having increasingly worse freezes during gameplay; summoning, character switching, Cursor disappearing making your turns in combat really frustrating (this might be tied to frame freezing, not sure) Just wanted to add to the growing pile of complaints for the PS5 splitscreen.
At first we were happy to march through the issues, because it is a fantastic game and is everything I would want in a D&D game, so thank you Larian for that. But now that we're in Act II we've found our sessions getting shorter and shorter due to the growing/persistent performance issues, it's a damn shame. I'm very tempted to just wait for a sale on PC and pick up two copies there.
Just to add on, we've tried doing the "fix" of having only one save, that didn't work for us, we've had 1 save to 10 saves, the issues were persistent for all those situations.
Really hoping we get an update that can help split screen co-op players get a smoother experience.
Everything looks ugly, we will have to suck it up and forget about the game for now, if I had known I would never have bought it, a great game but unfinished, it is as if we were playing a game still in development
Yeah, my partner and I are having the same issue (I picked a necromancer wizard as well) to the point we had to stop playing. Here is hoping it gets fixed soon.
As others said, it becomes increasingly worse. We are playing for about 35 hours at the moment and unfortunately, it has become impossible to continue. The frustration has overtook fun.
Some people proposed the idea of playing single player with two customized characters and letting the second controller join in during battles or vice versa. That would be a desperate solution given that we paid handsomely for this game but it shows how much people like it.
I found something that significantly helps: turn off the internet connection on your PS5. This got rid of the cursor bug completely and cut the lagging and freezing at least in half. We’re at a little over 30 hours, just barely into Act 2 and it was unbearably buggy and laggy. Now it’s totally playable, though certainly not perfect.

I'll try it when I get home to see if it helps and I'll report back with whatever.
For me, however, the situation is quite annoying, I started the game in split screen mode but seeing the number of bugs I disconnected the player (remaining his character in the party) and we exchange the controller when it's the other's turn but for a couple of of days the other player's character no longer follows the party automatically as he did before and so now due to this bug the game has become unplayable for the two of us and I don't know how to unblock this situation, can anyone have any advice on how to make him follow me again (I have tried grouping, long and short rest, pushes, kill and revive, load an old save, do some tests in the camp but none of that worked) please HELP ME
After 30+ hours, in Act 1, started to have freezes that are becoming a nuisance to the experience of the game. Really hope that the coming patches address this situation.
I have also opened a bug report.
I am not sure that I have been discussed before, but removing split screen and playing with two controllers on PS5 did the trick to have a nice (although inferior) experience. The trick is to configure the second controller to be an assist controller. That allows basically to have the two controllers controlling the first player.
To use an assist controller, go to [Settings] > [Accessibility] > [Controllers] > [Use Second Controller for Assistance], and then turn on [Use Assist Controller].
Turning off internet on ps5 didnt change anything for me, appart from bugging the characters and giving control to my character to my partner.
Edit: Just had cursor bug too while offline
Strange. We’ve played about 3 hours since turning off internet and haven’t had a single cursor bug (previously we had it at least 2-3 times per fight). Lag is significantly reduced as well. Only other thing I can think of is that after I turned off internet I restarted my PS5…
I found this approach through a couple of commenters on Reddit so I’m not the only one who’s experienced it working. I encourage everybody to try it to see if it works for you.
We’ll see if it continues to work but so far it’s been a huge improvement. The only downside is we do need to go back to camp to assign characters which is a minor annoyance compared to all the other BS we were dealing with.
You solved the problem of the characters not following you by putting the PS5 offline because it doesn't solve anything for me. Do you happen to know other even more complex methods to solve this problem, thank you in advance.
Unfortunately this has greatly affected my enjoyment of the game. Constant stuttering and lagging on the PS5 version any time these minor actions like switching characters or spells casting…
I have tried the following: 1. Removing all saves except one 2. Cleaning up inventory and sending items to camp 3. Playing in offline mode
Nothing improves the situation. Currently at the end of Act 1 35 hours in.
It worked for me putting the ps5 offline. Like you said The problem still exist, still have the lag, but I think cut the lagging and freezing at least in half. Thank you, it's playable now. Shandowhwart summoning would took like 25 to 30 sec, now is like 10 sec.
Confirming that playing offline decreased the freezing to 2 seconds.
This is crazy my younger fellows. I remember back in the late 80s I used to spend hours with my cousin to connect our ancient console to the TV in order to place Space Invaders. Our enthusiasm was so big that it could tolerate anything.
It's not exactly the same now, but I'm still powering through this ridiculous freeze because I rarely feel so hyped up with a video game anymore as I do with BG3.
Sucks for me and my boyfriend who play couch co op with our friend who plays with us online. I guess we’re doomed to 15+ second 0fps freeze lag from doing basic actions and the cursor/target disappearing all the time.
We had so much fun with divinity 2 playing together, it’s a real shame baldurs was released in this state and we still have zero acknowledgment from Larian
When we were forced into offline because of the PSN issue the other day, the multiplayer option in the menu disappeared so I couldn’t assign my wife her companion character. So I was in control of 3 and her only 1.
Is there a work around for this? Or am I missing something?
Seems like an oversight that if you’re offline you can’t assign characters in split screen play?
You need to send the companion to camp by talking to them and make your wife talk to said companion in camp to take them with you again.
Oh wow thank you, I appreciate the quick response. Kind of an annoying work around but better than leaving her with one character.
I was getting annoyed by that (other than the lag/freezing) but someone has posted here on this topic a few pages ago. As the First player you can press "options" and then enter "multiplayer", there you can assign any character to any player party.

When you’re offline there isn’t the multiplayer option. I’m familiar with selecting multiplayer while in the pause menu screen and reassigning characters but that didn’t seem to be an option when playing offline.
So my partner and I have persisted with a long (loot all playthrough) and the issue became untenable. We were at 80h mid act 2 and summoning is taking almost 1 min, there is freeze lag in other normal actions as well like levelling up, opening inventory etc...
It's a shame we've had to resort to this - very disappointing, BUT we are having a much better time using the PS5s assistance controller function. We basically don't bring in player 2, but set the second ps5 controller as an assist controller that player two controls.
This means we get some of the coop experience ( they control 2 characters in battle) and they can control characters in general play (albeit not at the same time as the other player). It doesn't feel so bad for ex to just say - hold on I'll disarm or lockpick, let I'll talk to this NPC cause we need X y or z skill etc... and the other player waits. The main cost is not being able to do things simultaneously.
The benefits are numerous: * primarily - there is no freeze lag cause technically it's single player but with two custom characters
* crucially also though - the screen is merged, but you still have two controllers active and the hand over is seem less.
* also very grateful it runs the game in 60 FPS so generally just nicer. We def recommend fellow ps5 split screeners give it a try.
In the meantimeI have not yet received any feedback from Larian. I have also tried the instructions with the assistant controller and the internet turned off. Is it possible to play as a different character while using the Assistant Controller? I couldn't figure it out and that's why we abandoned the idea as it's also impractical when one person is steering left and the other right. Turning off the internet didn't work at all in fact it had the opposite effect. When the internet is disabled the multiplayer option in the main menu disappears forcing us to reassign characters through the camp. That was no option fur us because yesterday we experienced the worst lag and freezes ever! Without giving away any spoilers we are relatively close to the end of Act Two and it got so bad that we almost considered quitting the game. However we pushed through but I must say it was absolutely no fun. I felt more sad and frustrated while playing. But then the closer we got to the end of Act Two the better the performance suddenly became. For the first time yesterday and after 60h gameplay we experienced smooth animation of a summoning spell in split-screen mode. lol I could also suddenly switch between characters without any issues. However during combat I had the problem that one character could no longer move at all. The indicator was missing. Attacks worked so he could move through attacking but regular movement was impossible throughout the entire battle. Tomorrow the next patch is set to be released and I hope it addresses the performance issues on the PS5. I haven't found any information about what the patch includes yet except that it's supposed to be quite large once again.

So when using an assist controller you can't control two characters simultaneously. You need to decide who is steering the party at any given time and the secondary player assumes control when they want to intervene.
Not ideal, but for us it's worth it for the non split / merged 60fps experience. Closer to DOS anyway.
Bump. Us are just like everyone else. The game is becoming unplayable. We do really hope today's patch will fix this issue, otherwise we will stick to assistant controller trick for now on.
Haven't had the time to try it out properly, but I just updated to the latest patch, opened up split screen, tried to change characters and I got no freeze/lag. Seems to be working?
Same here, haven't had time to check this out properly, but it looks like patch completely fixed the issue. Character switch went from 5 second lag to like none. Love you.
And summon is not 15 seconds anymore, but instant.
