I've mentioned this in... some thread or other around here, but yeah.
You can find a note in the mansion which implies he was planning to replace Astarion with someone else, but that didn't happen, apparently. I'm not sure why - apparently all he needs is another spawn with the right symbol carved on them. Wouldn't have been hard to do.
