I'm a bit late to this, but a common build is to have 1 level of Cleric or Artificer for armor and shield proficiency. If you go Cleric there are some great spells that Wizards don't get, and also don't rely on your Wisdom. The Guidance cantrip, Bless, and Healing Word all come to mind. If you start with Artificer, you get Constitution Save proficiency.

As a cherry on top for either, your spell slot progression is not affected at all. The only thing you sacrifice (spell-wise) is on odd levels you're one level behind in spell progression, even though your spell slots are unaffected. So on those levels you just upcast.

Example: At level 7 you would normally be getting 4th level spells, but you won't get them until 8. But you'll still get the 4th level spell slot, so you can use it to upcast whichever spell you choose.
