Simmons is an amazing actor, and Kethric's lore is great but it is all wasted if you are not forced to meet him during Act 2 like you are forced to meet Raphael. A simple response from Kethric before the fight could be like "So you are the one who has been causing all this trouble" or something to that effect (I am not a writer so be gentle). Every major villain in this game should have a chance to be in the spot light, but this particular villain was a missed opportunity.

Jaheira flat out told you to infiltrate the Moonrise Towers to get information about Ketheric's immortality, and you chose to instead go off exploring and do the Gauntlet before the towers. Is that the game's fault?

The game suggests that Ketheric is immortal, and therefore, a direct confrontation with him would be pointless. When you learn that there is a way to investigate the secret of his immortality, it's quite intuitive to first search for this, so you can be well-prepared for the final confrontation.
