It is pretty early to talk about it but I was wondering about <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" />'s price.
Normally it depends on 2 factors:
- The team's reputation
- The developpement time

DD was 3 years in developpement yet it didn't cost much.
So I wonder, will the price be the same for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/riftrunner.gif" alt="" /> as it was for <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/div.gif" alt="" />.

I paid a normal price for it imho. It seems that many people got it very cheap a few months later, but i got it a few days after it hit the shelves so...

Seriously, I paid 70 + Tax for Freelancer and DD cost 45 + tax.

The price is set by the publisher. Developers have no say in this. A publisher will try to make as much money from it as possible. As such it's trying to cut down on development time and cost and will sell the game for a price they think they will get away with.
Normal marketing rules apply here as well. Higher demand -> higer price, lower demand -> lower price. The teams reputation might add to the higher demand part. But development time might not have any relevance. Publishers prefer to work with a 'fixed price'. So what they have to pay is fixed, regardless of the development time. However when the develoment time is longer then the return on investment is longer also, which is the drive behind the publisher wanting to cut down on development time.

I remember Gathering of Developers as a kind of developers community publisher. Sadly, as I've heard it, they had not much success in it.

Well, going to local stores myself, I find the price of games rapidly rising. From like €40 to €50 for the average game now. It's kinda too much for me to buy lots of games anymore.

Last two *new* games I bought were Divine Divinty (because I swore I'd buy it heh) and Hitman2. That was like around September-October last year. The only other game I bought since then was at reduced price, Warrior Kings.

I do play newer games though, but only at friend's places who have the money to buy them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />

As I mentioned in another post, when pirating a game you don't steal from the developper but you steal from the publisher. So Johnson stole from CDV (yay). Still shame on you, Johnson for saying it in the official forum. You might've hurt someone's feelings (I can't believe I am saying that!). Plus you missed the well done instruction manual. Oh well...

Even so, I'd still have to disagree with DEATHATTHEDOOR a little bit: Even if Larian was paid beforehand, they still would need good sales. well, what i wanted to say is, that i didn't really care about the price, because i wanted the game and i thought (and still think), that a small developer team like the larians (exept the publisher <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif" alt="" />) deserves every euro, the game costs!

But, when i look at such hyped titles like Unreal2 (with aubout 5-7h of gameplay <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />) or warcraft III ...i dont feel ashamed of owning a pirate copy, cause i know these games will sell often enough / are not reliant upon every sold copy...and without the posibility of getting a pirate copy, i wouldnt't have bought them either!

Alright, alright, sorry. Anyway Larian is not a company who's games I'd pirate (unlike Betseda: DIE BETSEDA!). I will buy RR and maybe even DD2.

Jurak, what I needed is someone's opinion about the movie. Better someone I know a bit. I know the official site, I know the movie has Johnny Depp, it was made by Disney, there was a game developped by Akella and published by Betseda (die, Betty!) and the movie was about pirates.

hmm price... i had trouble finding it in hawaii but i did and it was the last copy and the box had been openned. i made it very clear to the store that i would return it if it didn't work... but it did. i paid.... 39.99 but it went down the 36 or 37 after i bought it.

I'm still wondering how Johnson made a copy. A friend of mine wanted a copy but couldn't find one in any of the local shops and doesn't have a card to order it online. I tried to make him one but I keep getting "Cannot Read Disk". <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

Right now I feel most of the rip-off titles right now are online games expecting you to pay $50-$60 for the game (in many cases what's in the box isn't even a finished product) download 100 or so megs of patches then pay $10-$15 for the priviledge of playing it. If you play more than 2 or 3 games this can get expensive.

Asking that after saying "unless my friend makes a copy..." looks like you are trying to find out how much work will be required to pirate the game. At the very least, it is in poor taste to talk about pirating software on the company's official forum.

CD keys don't do much to prevent piracy, unless it is for software purchased online (and the key can be tied to a name/address/phone number), there is a mandatory registration (Windows XP), or it is for an online-only game where a server can keep track of keys and make sure two people can not use the same key at the same time.

think about this: say you spend a great deal of time, money and effort to make something that you are extremely proud of. it takes a long time to finally get it out to people who are eagerly awaiting it's arrival. you're happy about people demanding your product, because all your effort has not gone to waste. the expense of making and distributing your thing is a great deal, and you need every bit of profit to make more things for people who are demanding them. now, with the thought of the money you need for the next things to make weighing on your mind, someone walks up to you and says, "hey! hows it going? i love your thing, it's totally cool? can you help with this and this? oh, by the way, i stole it and ripped you off. but it's cool, right? and i'll probably steal your next one, too. lol!"

I don't know if you're too dumb, haven't met you in RL - but your opinion about illegal copies is indeed offending towards an official developer forum.
And I do think it is not appropriate here to defend your non-payment-policy.
My personal conclusion about you lacking tact or not: Yes, you do in this case. I just haven't quite figured out if you do it by own choice or out of the adolescent stage you're in at the moment. But I hope, you will be able to see - after the storms of puberty have ceased - how damaging this piracy opinion is.
