As much as I loved BG1 and BG2, I think it is unfair to compare the rather large roster of companions in those two games to BG3. There is much, much more integration of companion into story here, and the rather amazing voice acting and motion capture to consider.
That being said, I do wish they had included a shorty or two to round out the roster.
Even better... make it Jan Jansen so we can hear him take Wulbren down 5 or 6 notches.
This is true. On the other hand, I actually think BG2 really outdoes BG3 in some aspects, when it comes to characters. First is the romance stories, they just seem like they follow a more coherent arc and actually involve character development in BG2. Second is the inter-character interaction (as in, party members interacting with each other but not with the MC).
