I didn't talk to the children on my playthrough, missed them entirely, as well as missing out on meeting the Gur before going to the palace. I can't see that it would mess with a cutscene not triggering, or being blacked out, but who knows. There were some odd Dark Urge bugs too if you didn't find out certain things before you actually entered the city.
