Since I read the book of a genome specialist, stating there are only 7 clans (genome speaking) in the entire human world - and him calling whites "white Africans", I grin a lot and think of how racists would react. Kiya
Brian Sykes or Bryan Sykes is his name.
*mod* 7 not 2 clans, sorry, was a typo *mod*

There was once a geneticist (don't recall the name) a hundred years ago (or so) who wrote the definitive book on genetics for that time. Despite his intelligence and knowledge of genetics, he was still the product of a not particularly enlightened time. In the back of the book there was a diagram of a tree, listing various racial/ethnic groups in order of quality. British were, of course, at the top, with Irish and Scottish people below that. About half way down the diagram were native Americans, and towards the bottom Chinese. After the book was published, he had two very smart Chinese graduate students who impressed him. The next edition of the book had the same diagram, except with the places of native Americans and Chinese swapped.

I'm glad he's not around nowadays. He'd be asking for sponsership to see which race is highest on the tree!

Bryan Sykes: Adam's Curse: A Story of Sex, Genetics, and the Extinction of Men = [color:"yellow"]I'm really looking forward to this one, on 1. Sept. 2003 [/color] Synopsis Genetically speaking, the big difference between men and women is that where women have two X chromosomes, men have one X and one Y. It is surprising that one chromosome difference out of our total of 26 can have such an important consequence, but it does. Is this relatively small genetic variance really sufficient to explain the differences between the sexes, not just the physical but the psychological, social, even cultural? Drawing on his own work at the forefront of modern genetics and the exciting theories of evolutionary biology, Bryan Sykes takes us on a fascinating exploration into the science of sex and gender, and takes a scientific look at what makes men tick. From the most basic questions - why are there only two sexes in humans? Why is there sex at all? - to an examination of maleness - is there a genetic cause for men's promiscuity? Is there such a thing as the male homosexual gene? Can science offer an explanation for the rise of patriarchal society? Sykes's conclusions will surprise some people and are bound to cause controversy. His own research has shown that the all-important male Y chromosome is getting smaller. As the generations pass the female X chromosome is taking over. It is cannibalising parts of the Y chromosome. Women are winning the evolutionary battle of the sexes. His conclusion is that men, slowly but surely, are headed for extinction.
The Seven Daughters of Eve: The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry
Those are his books. Kiya

"I'm glad he's not around nowadays" I think there might be questions about his methods of determining the relative quality of races/cultures, if there is enough flexibility to change the rank of a billion people based on a his experience with 2 from that group. From Amazon.comThe Seven Daughters of Eve by Bryan Sykes "A traveler from an antique land... lives within us all," claims Sykes, a professor of genetics at Oxford. This unique traveler is mitochondrial DNA, and, as this provocative account illustrates, it can help scientists and archeologists piece together the history of the human race. Mitochondrial DNA is present in every cell in the body, and it remains virtually unchanged (aside from random mutations) as it passes from mother to daughter. By quantifying and analyzing the mutations of this relatively stable circle of DNA, Sykes has solved some of the hottest debates about human origins. For example, he clarified a long-running debate among anthropologists over the original inhabitants of the Cook Islands. After retrieving mitochondrial DNA samples from the island natives, Sykes concluded that the natives emigrated from Asia, not America, as many Western anthropologists had contended. In a similar manner, Sykes analyzed samples from native Europeans to determine that modern humans are not at all related to Neanderthals. The book's most complex and controversial find that the ancient European hunter-gatherers predominated over the farmers and not vice versa leads Sykes to another stunning conclusion: by chance, nearly all modern Europeans are descendants of one of seven "clan mothers" who lived at different times during the Ice Age. Drawing upon archeological and climatic records, Sykes spins seven informative and gracefully imagined tales of how these "daughters of Eve" eked out a living on the frozen plains. (July 9)Forecast: Sykes is a bit of a celebrity geneticist, as he was involved in identifying the remains of the last Romanovs. This fame, plus his startling conclusions augmented by a five-city tour should generate publicity and sales among science, archeology and genealogy buffs.

Don't worry Nero. What the man said is that the X is becomming more and more dominant. I doubt very much that the Y will die out any time soon. Perhaps it is just a trend that more girls are being born now than boys. Perhaps Kiya can give us all a little more info on this fasinating topic?

Just reading that bit about the extinction of the X chromosone. Budgies select the sex of their chicks based on the availability of food. Where there is more food, they have females so that they can stay and produce more birds there. Where there is less food, males are born to fly off and populate other areas.
I wonder if the same is happening to humans, only more slowly due to our size. In the western world, there is an abundance of food for most people. I don't know where his studies took place, but there's every chance he only looked at the average citizen. Those of us with plenty of food may be having more females, while people who are going hungry would be more likely to have males. Those without food may never be in a position to have children, so the extra males aren't born.
I'm taking a complete stab in the dark that most of us here had few problems with food and such in their childhood. I'm curious: just for a small study here at the forums, how many males and females are in your family, including yourself and siblings but not your parents? There's one female and two males in mine.

3 females - and HandEFood? It's the Y-chromosome, you made a Freudian error in your post
This book will appear in September 2003, I haven't read it - the German review talks about genetic technique. It's slightly different than the Engl. review. As soon as I can order the German book for our library, I'm SURE to read it and I'll inform then Kiya
Addendum: I know of fish races where the females can turn into males if they're not threatened anymore by dominant male fish of their breed - I wish, Sir Toejam was here, he'd know exactly which race I'm talking about.

Part of the German review in amazon.de Diese männlichen Erfolge der Vergangenheit sind allesamt Pyrrhus-Siege. Male victories in the past have turned out to be Pyrrhus victories. The x-chromosome has genetic technique on its side. With its help, future will be female - male future is unnecessary, they're not useful anymore. In this case, females could decide the gender battle for themselves. Will there be only one gender in future? Kiya No further info. But he's a genetic technique specialist

I thought this was a Lair, not a Y and X lair
back to important things, Kiya, weneed more teeth, with all these people in the lair at once, we could get about 50 teeth, and none are Undead, unless I'm mistaken, so we can clear our conciouses
