There was once a geneticist (don't recall the name) a hundred years ago (or so) who wrote the definitive book on genetics for that time. Despite his intelligence and knowledge of genetics, he was still the product of a not particularly enlightened time. In the back of the book there was a diagram of a tree, listing various racial/ethnic groups in order of quality. British were, of course, at the top, with Irish and Scottish people below that. About half way down the diagram were native Americans, and towards the bottom Chinese.
After the book was published, he had two very smart Chinese graduate students who impressed him. The next edition of the book had the same diagram, except with the places of native Americans and Chinese swapped.
