You need to send the companion to camp by talking to them and make your wife talk to said companion in camp to take them with you again.
Oh wow thank you, I appreciate the quick response. Kind of an annoying work around but better than leaving her with one character.
I was getting annoyed by that (other than the lag/freezing) but someone has posted here on this topic a few pages ago. As the First player you can press "options" and then enter "multiplayer", there you can assign any character to any player party.
When you’re offline there isn’t the multiplayer option. I’m familiar with selecting multiplayer while in the pause menu screen and reassigning characters but that didn’t seem to be an option when playing offline.
