Act 2
CLICK FOR GNOMES

Currently trying to do this rescue without the gnomes and tieflings getting themselves killed.

I really can't understand the mentality of the morons who produce this sort of thing. Either the prisoners should stay in their cells until I give the all clear or they should just run for the boat. For them to launch themselves at the guards is just ridiculous.

First umpteen attempts last night:
Went down the oubliette, freed up the boat and then broke the wall in the gnomes cell - gnomes rush out and round to towards the tieflings cell. I get to the tiefling cell first and break the wall and the tieflings run out. Meanwhile the guards are coming through the gnomes cell and the gnomes rush back to fight them as do the tieflings.
I manage to jam a couple of my team in the wall and they stop the prisoners getting past but my people just get hammered by the guards.

Next I tried breaking into the tiefling cell first but that was about the same result.

Third time lucky. I tried doing both cells at the same time but that was worse than the previous two attempts.

I did a couple of variations on those three. Eventually gave up.

Just gave it another go tonight, this time from the other side.

Took out the guards and the scrying eyes then went in for the warder. Part way through the warder fight the gnomes and tieflings showed up in the turn order. I killed the warder easily enough then went back to the - now empty - cells. Somehow the prisoners got out of the cells through the locked door. I got a journal update notification and the two entries said Wulbren had made it back to the Last Light and that Wulbren had died trying to escape THROUGH Moonrise Towers.

Gave up at that point. EDIT: I just discovered that the levers in the warders office open the cell doors. While I was fighting the warder she went invisible while standing in front of the levers so I cast faerie fire and it was about this time that the prisoners appeared in the turn order. I doubt that faerie fire can throw levers but why would the warder open the cell doors?

If I try it tomorrow I'll maybe not take the keys from the dead guards.

Or should I clear out all of Moonrise Towers first and then come back for the prisoners?

I've not done the Mausoleum/Gauntlet/Nightsong yet and I lied my way into Moonrise. Any suggestions on the batting order would be welcome, especially the Ketheric and Nightsong part.

The warden triggers an alarm that opens all the cell doors and alerts guards in nearby areas. The cell doors open so that the guards can attack the prisoners. You don't want this to happen.

So, take out the scrying eyes and the guards. Then attack the warden when she is far away from the levers and block her path to them. After that throw in the hammer to Wulbren or open the path from the oubliette. Do not unlock the cell doors, because then they will try to escape towards Moonrise Tower and run into the guards and get wrecked.

Thanks.
Keeping the warder away from the levers was the thing.

I guess it's a trickier questline for people than I thought. I think it's best to rescue those as one of the first things You do in Act 2. I got this thing done the first time I tried, even with encountering some bugs and nuisances, so I will write for You how I did it below:

After You enter Towers You can get straight to the small closed doors on the right side of the hall. Stop here, close all the doors and wait for the Warden Eye, then kill it fast. This eye goes down to the prison so You have minus one already. Then go down and here You meet two guard ladies and a cultist on duty. You can leave them alive if You want, they are unimportant for the rescue mission if You do it right.
Next, go to the torture chamber opposite the guarding ladies, close the door and wait for the Warden Eye, kill it fast. Here it got tricky for me, as it appears there were two invisible investigators in the room. I've talked myself out and positioned my team for 2vs1 fight each. Be sure to kill them or out them fast, so they will not alarm anyone in the Towers.
Then You can go further. I checked how the prison looked and how many guards were there. Then I entered the Warden's Tower in the center. Remember to close the door before anything! You can talk with the Warden etc. I did, then I somehow missclicked or there was some bug, I don't remember, but one of my characters used the ladder to go up. This place was off-limits so the Warden also got on the upper floor to talk with my poor companion. Up there is the Eye, so this was my first target, and then I attacked the Warden after the talk. Other characters blocked her path to the ladder so she couldn't get to the levers; to be fair I did it by accident, never thought she would otherwise focus the levers. While fighting with her here You'll have to remember that there is a second Eye that can enter that tower through closed doors on the lower floor, so watch for it or prepare a companion to kill it quickly when it does so and I suggest You to kill that second Eye here when it enters.
After this You have all that tower for yourself, no one suspecting anything. Then from the upper floor go to the wooden balcony and from here You have a view of most of the prison and cells. Remember to stay hidden, thanks to this You will see all of the guard's line of sight. What is left are two guards and one Eye. Use the turn mode and firstly focus on the Eye! Wait until it is in shooting range, but not in the line of sight of the static guard at the end of the prison. I had two rogues here so they sneak attacked from here. After You kill the Eye, the patrolling guard will come to the place where it was destroyed and shout about murder... Just shoot or sneak attack her also!
Then You can get out of Warden's Tower and go to the last guard who unfortunately for him was too nearsighted and didn't realize what I did in front of his eyes. You can just kill the poor guy on the spot.

I'm kind of an explorer so after this and before I made the next move and freed prisoners I checked all of the prison for an eventual alternative way out and since I don't want to spoil things too much for You I just suggest it to You also. Remember that You can move boxes and chests around and also use them in creative ways such as stairs or something! Hope it helps. wink

I waited until the warden was in her room and killed her there. Then did go out and killed the others, including the eyes and then freed the prisoners.

The eyes died quickly before anything happened. I guess, I got lucky there.
I didn't look up a guide just saw in the first try, that if you free the prisoners before dealing with the prison staff, they get themselves killed. So I reloaded and just killed anything not tiefling or gnome before freeing the prisoners.

I remember on my 1st run I was so pissed off by the Warden acting all smug I just slaughtered her there and then. She got curb-stomped so hard that she couldn't even move to activate the levers, then I killed all the guards and the eye in the basement. Then looked around, found Wulbren's hammer and rest flowed naturally... never even encountered such difficulties. wink

On my 2nd run I did the opposite, killed everyone and saved the Warden for last. But yeah, there are few different approaches (other than taking the boat at the back of the cave) to this quest, but that also requires clearing the docks (at least there are tadpoles in that one barrel). wink

Yeah, got me frustrated at first. You have to play this part as Assassins Gate 3 laugh just eliminate everything before freeing the little sucidal maniacs. If you don't care about the loot, lots of possibilities for an untimely death by gravity for unsuspecting guards.

I counted the guard’s passing. Then I slowed her with grease, lots of grease. Bought plenty of time for Wulbrun to free everyone. Then I manned the choke point before the boat and ground down the tough guards. Prisoners all became a line of archers.

On my 3rd try I might add.

First few times I played the idiot and everyone got slaughtered.

On the bright side, future prison breaks were first time successes.

Just did this encounter on 2nd play through:

Got caught talking to prisoners, but not before getting word of the escape attempt.

So I went to the far end of the walkway where there's only one guard and my Astarion assassin used wyvern poison to eliminate him. Looted 'em and stashed the body in a crate.

Strung out the party along the walkway and went turn based to time enemy movements. Wyll had Hunger of Hadar ready to slow and block LOS if need be.

Floating eye came along. Assassinated with arrow of construct slaying.

Wandering guard came along. Poison ganked. Body stashed in pile of rags.

Next Floating eye. Eldritch blasted.

Warden? Got a good dose of poison with critical hits. Party is optimized for initiative wherever possible. Didn't get an action. Third floating eyes dispatched.

Heck I'm on a roll. Any solitary Absolutists are going to get picked off and body stashed. Don't think I can one-round-kill pairs with my balanced party though. Probably need Lae'zel for Shadowheart to get DPR high enough to try.

That was probably the most satisfying bit I had in BG3. Without an easy solution being provided I had to think outside of the box.

I lured the Warden upstairs and killed her there. I ambushed the floating cameras, and than assassinated guards by luring them near the edge and pushing them down. After that prisoners could escape undisturbed.

There's a very easy solution to this.

Never talk to the Warden. She will stay put in her room. Kill the patrolling guard and the two scrying eyes before they get to call for reinforcements (Thunderwave 1-shots them even on Tactician). Proceed to talk to Wulbren and give him any kind of blunt weapon (Quarterstaff will do), jump up the cliff in the back, run around and release the tieflings. They'll run to the boat and that's that. Nobody will be hostile afterward because they don't know you did it, even the Warden.

Some of you people are wild. All it takes is ambush killing the wandering eyes before the wardens, then kill the warden patrolling the cells when she gets near the entrance to the prison, then go into the warden's room and close the door and kill her. You grab the tools up the ladder in her office, give to the gnomes, open the cell doors via warden room's lever 2 to the gnomes after they have broken the wall and break the tieflings out so you can follow them to the boat.
