I don't think anyone takes the premade hirelings seriously (those backstories... At times things in the game feel like parody or Larian taking the piss, because some writing ("hot githyanki girlfriend" or moments feel REALLY off) or likes them as a concept.
They are especially annoying if they happen to share the voice with your custom character, as if having the same barks (that we can't customize our PC's "personality" and making anyone, from a gith to a half-orc, has the same array of generic adventurer voicelines, is a huge missed opportunity) wasn't enough already.
