I'm not quite sure why they can't jump but it's a bit frustrating as they're perma pet and they can get stuck on terrian or can't follow when the game compels you to jump to progress. I can't really see why they can't jump. They pick their feet up to walk so they should be able to jump. I prefer them over the mud imp things but the mud imp things fly ability allows them to more easily follow you.
