Larian have acknowledged it as a known bug. The problem only appeared after Patch 3 so if people try saves from before Patch 3 then the problem will not be there, mods or no mods.

I don't think it's always as simple as removing all mods. Things can still be left behind which impact the game.

Anyway, as I have a completely vanilla game that has never had any mods, it's not happening to me. My question is, if it's not mods, why isn't it happening in my game? I'm not asking to "checkmate" an argument. It's a legitimate question. I sincerely believe this is a mod issue, and I accept that I may be wrong.

It's hard to say what triggered it. I've seen modded, unmodded, and across multiple consoles. They probably won't tell us what triggered it, but on this playthrough, entering Last Light Inn first time was after Patch 3, and I did engage in the initial dialogue with the Ox.

I only signed up here, to bump this weird, annoying, stupid bug back to the front.
It has been blocking my entire game progress for a week now.

With an otherwise exclusively positive game experience, this is really very, verry annoying and frustrating!

This bug, the lower city crash, and the Mizora bug really need to get fixed ASAP as they all block progress.

I found a simple work around for it that seems to solve it with no issues (dammon and ox quest unbroken for me) .
When you go to the last light (there should be a auto save right when you enter the area before you trigger the ox) move forward to trigger the ox so it shows the initiative popup for it in the distance and jump to the waypoint menu and warp to a act 1 zone. Be quick since time is still passing while in the menu, if you do it in time when you warp back the ox is gone and dammon is safe, the ox turned up still in act 3 for the remainder of its quest for me.

No rampage for me, all went normally when I entered the inn. Maybe because I started a new game after patch 3? Playing on ps5.

Post Hotfix 8 this is still happening for me. I literally have not been able to play the game since Patch 3, and it's getting really frustrating.

The post 2 above yours workaround does seem to work from my recent test.

Go into the inn for first time slowly till Jaheira intercepts, get through her convo and hold your position if you haven't seen any initiative roll up near Dammons shed then all is good.
Quicksave for good measure and open map to get your bearing on where to quickly click for a Act1 zone, I used Goblin Camp.
Close map and move forwards to where you unlock Last Light Fast travel point, this should be far enough to trigger Ox/Dammon initiative roll and fight, don't hesitate when you see the initiative roll, open maps and click out to Goblin Camp.
Now go back to Last Light, if you got the timing right Dammon will be alive and well and the Strange Ox will have vanished (if Flanker15's luck applies the Ox has gone to Act3)

Thankyou! Just made an account to praise this workaround. I tried 10 times to misty step into combat but it never worked. I am on hotfix #9 and this is still an issue.

Ditto - thank you so much for this, it worked a treat for me as well - you do seem to have to travel right away when you see the init. roll!

Thank you for this. I just ran into this in Act 2. I had to transport as soon as the Waypoint Discovered message appeared. Took a few tries but got it. Seems like a pretty major bug considering how it impacts Karlach's quest line.

This workaround literally saved my life and I made an account here just to praise it - and to confirm that I was still able to find the ox in act 3!!
