Then have it so a family member of that pixie shows up or have the spirit of the dead pixie help you through the shadow if you break it or something.
The fact is that freeing the pixie is infinitely better because you don't have to dedicate a character to the lantern. Which again, going down an evil route is significantly less rewarding in terms of gear and storytelling.
