I am worried, based on the level of emotional investment members of the community have in the game, that canon romances would be received rather unpleasantly by certain corners of the community.
That's one of the reasons games like this can't really be adapted well. A new story, or maybe vignettes showing some characters or events before/after I'd say is the way to go.
