100% agree. Such an annoying thing. A much better solution would be allow inventory management of every companion in camp, or a shared inventory of consumables.
I, too, agree. I just took away all of the companions key-, alchemy- and ration stash's to prevent my character getting flooded, when changing companions ( I do that a lot). But apart from quest items, I don't think, anything has to be transferred.
