How about just release adventure modules like I remember when I was young if that could be cranked out and easier on the staff. No being overworked. Maybe Dark Sun, or Ravenloft.... or sure, even Dragonlance. A three act story structure in one act?
I have made this suggestion more than a few times in various forums. Even if they just do more adventures in the Forgotten Realms, there are lots of places to create some amazing modules. I am not sure how their contract with WotC is setup so they might be Realm limited.
This concept of adventure modules to me is the future of RPGs. You build a SOLID game engine with the base mechanics. You can tweak it a bit with each module but the core engine stays. This means ALL of the development for the next module is the adventure, not the mechanics. This could allow a faster turn around and give that initial investment a huge boost on return.
I could see a GOOD RPG system like that taking a lot of gamers away from other games as those adventure modules would just keep interest stirred. Plus these are not traditional DLC, you do not need to play the base module and not buying a module has NO impact on other module purchases. Each in essence is an independent game
